Jun 3	Lakehead Researchers Serve Up Northwestern Ontario Food Report A new report by Ontario researchers – including two from Lakehead University – documents how farmers’ markets, co-ops and other sustainable food systems strengthen the economic, environmental and social health of local communities. Lakehead University's Dr. Mirella Stroink and Dr. Connie Nelson led a process that included interviews and in-depth consultations with representatives of more than 40 local food initiatives across Northern Ontario.
May 30	Lakehead University’s 2013 Thunder Bay Campus Convocation Ceremonies (Thunder Bay) Lakehead will graduate approximately 2,500 students during the University’s Convocation ceremonies at its Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses over the next two weeks. In Thunder Bay, graduates, friends, family, award recipients, and honourees will celebrate achievements this Friday and Saturday at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium.

May 13	Lakehead University Honours Seventh Chancellor, Dr. Arthur Mauro (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is hosting a reception to honour its 7th Chancellor, Dr. Arthur Mauro, today, from 5:00 – 6:30 pm, in the Office of the President. Lakehead President & Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson, will thank Dr. Mauro on behalf of the University community for the years of service he gave to the institution. Dr. Mauro’s three year term as Chancellor of Lakehead University ended on December 31, 2012. Respected for his numerous career- and community-based accomplishments, Dr. Mauro’s leadership in furthering Lakehead University's initiatives includes his role in establishing Lakehead’s new Faculty of Law. He believes that accomplishment is indicative of the critical role of the University in Northwestern Ontario and Canada.

Mar 28	Lakehead University's Powwow Celebrates Aboriginal Culture (Thunder Bay) (Friday, March 8, 2013 - Thunder Bay, ON) The Lakehead University Native Student Association (LUNSA) is hosting its annual powwow at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse from Friday, March 15 to Sunday, March 17, 2013. This year's theme is Celebrating 25 Years of Powwow at Lakehead University. "The LUNSA association executive is commemorating 25 years by kicking off the powwow season with this celebration," said Sarah Nelson, LUNSA President.
Mar 26	Faculty of Law Completes its Inaugural Year's Faculty (Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Faculty of Law is pleased to welcome Dr. Frances Chapman and Mr. Jason MacLean to its founding faculty. These appointments officially complete the Faculty’s first year hires. “Both of our new faculty bring with them solid legal practice credentials and strong scholarship — exactly what we need," said the Faculty of Law’s Dean, Lee Stuesser. Mar 25	New Canada Research Chair Appointed at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Dr. Pauline Sameshima has been awarded a Canada Research Chair in Arts Integrated Studies. She comes to Lakehead from Washington State University where she taught Arts Integrated Research in the Teacher Education Program and the Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education Graduate Program. Dr. Sameshima, an Associate Professor in Lakehead’s Faculty of Education, has also been awarded more than $25,000 by the Canada Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund to develop an Arts Integrated Research Lab. “My work promotes the use of arts in learning, teaching and research. It nurtures individual researcher and student creativity development and provides new perspectives,” Dr. Sameshima said.
Mar 18	University's Board of Governors Approves Lakehead's Strategic Plan for 2013-2018 (Thunder Bay) (March 8, 2013 - Thunder Bay, ON) After over two years of development, meetings and consultations with the University community and its various stakeholders, Lakehead's Board of Governors proudly approved the final draft of the University's Strategic Plan for 2013-2018. The Plan, entitled, Nurturing a Passion to Lead, embodies the bold, new vision that will oversee the collective vision of the University for the next five years: 'To provide a transformative university experience that is far from ordinary.' "Completing this Strategic Plan is a major milestone," said Board of Governors' Chair, Cameron Clark, "And we know that this is just the start. "Our Strategic Plan will serve as the framework to foster intellectual and human connections while giving students the tools to construct their own destiny," Clark added.
Mar 18	High School Students from City and Region will Aim for the Podium in Lakehead's Science Olympics (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's upcoming Science Olympics Northwestern Ontario will be a great opportunity for curious high school students to learn through doing, with help from professors and university students running the exciting events. Local and regional students from grades 9 to 12 will work in groups to solve fun challenges that apply their knowledge of science and engineering in creative ways. "Science Olympics is an excellent way to engage students in science, engineering and math while introducing them to Lakehead University," said Dr. Andrew Dean, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies.
Mar 18	Lakehead University Announces Two Decanal Renewals (Thunder Bay) Lakehead's Provost and Vice-President, Academic, Dr. Rod Hanley, is very pleased to announce the renewal of two of the University's deans: Faculty of Education's Dr. John O'Meara, and the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies' Dr. Andrew Dean. "These decanal renewals are in recognition and response to the dedication and contribution these individuals have made to their respective faculties and Lakehead as a whole," said Dr. Hanley. Mar 14	Lakehead hosts Rapid Change and the Future of Canada's North talks (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Centre for Northern Studies forum Rapid Change and the Future of Canada's North will feature four internationally renowned speakers on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16. Biology Professor Dr. John Smol, of Queen's University, recently appeared on an episode of the CBC documentary series The Nature of Things. Other speakers include Juli Abouchar, a Partner in Willms and Shier Environmental Lawyers LLP; and Professor of Human Geography, Dr. Dieter Muller of Umea University in Sweden.
Mar 6	First Nation and Métis Nation Leaders Support Faculty of Law's Proposed Course Enhancement (Thunder Bay) Lakehead's Dean of the Faculty of Law, Lee Stuesser, has proposed a new course that will be an enhancement to the new law program's first year curriculum. It is Dean Stuesser's hope that this proposal will address the fundamental demand of the students staging a sit-in outside the University President's Office. A proposed new law course, Law 1535: Aboriginal Perspectives, would be positioned as a mandatory, half-credit component of the curriculum to complement Law 1530: Native Canadian World Views & Law, which has already been approved by Lakehead University Senate. The course will assume an experiential format, and introduce students to Aboriginal culture, traditions and perspectives through speakers, dialogue and experience-based learning.
