(Thunder Bay) History Professors Michel Beaulieu and Ronald Harpelle recently attended an international conference in Uruguay to further their research into the social impacts of declining forest industries in Canada and Finland compared to the boom taking place in Uruguay. The goal of the conference was to discuss natural resource communities within the three countries.

(Thunder Bay) The mandate of Lakehead University's Centre for Research on Safe Driving (CRSD) is to conduct research on safe driving and educate Canadian drivers to reduce the number of vehicular crashes and subsequent injuries and fatalities by raising awareness of safe driving practices across the country. National Safe Driving Week runs from December 1 through 7, and CRSD researchers are urging all drivers to do something, however small, to make our roads safe all year round.

(Thunder Bay) The work of Lakehead's Canada Research Chair in Technoculture Dr. Gary Genosko (Sociology) is being showcased this week as part of the Canada Research Chairs' 10th Anniversary Conference. Dr. Genosko's research deals with the past monitoring practices of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) and it's affect on first nations communities and other populations around the province.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead's 2010/2011 Shad Valley team won first place for the Best Marketing Plan and Best Application of Scientific Principles awards, second place for Best Overall Project, and third place for Best Business Plan. Their product, called V720, is a capsule that meets consumer demand for a safe, effective, and non-invasive method of delivering the influenza vaccine into the bloodstream. The Shads and other top high-school students from around the country gathered in Waterloo on November 5 to share their unique innovations related to Canada's aging population at the prestigious 2010 Research In Motion/Shad Entrepreneurship Cup.

(Thunder Bay) Dr. Martha Dowsley and Dr. Harvey Lemelin attended a the two-day workshop which aimed to develop a recovery plan for the species which was recently listed as threatened in Ontario. The plan is expected to be released to the public by early next year, with the entire process wrapping up by fall 2011. The meeting, held in Timmins from October 28 to 29, was hosted jointly by the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and was attended by First Nations representatives from communities located along the Hudson and James Bay coasts, agency personnel, and researchers from across Canada.
