Nov 11	Lakehead University’s CERAH hosts Northwestern Ontario Palliative Care Booster (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Centre for Education and Research on Aging & Health (CERAH) is hosting a mini-conference, Northwestern Ontario Palliative Care Booster: It takes a Village, Teamwork in Palliative Care, at Thunder Bay’s Airlane Hotel & Conference Centre, November 14–15, 2013. The mini-conference brings together interdisciplinary palliative care providers to share current information on palliative and end-of-life care, and facilitates networking and team building in communities throughout the region and beyond.
Nov 8	High School Students Aim for Podium at Lakehead’s Science Olympics (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s upcoming Science Olympics Northwestern Ontario is a unique opportunity for curious high school students to learn through doing. Exciting events run by university professors and students add a competitive nature to the experience, too. Local and regional students from grades 9 to 12 will work in groups to solve fun challenges that apply their knowledge of science and engineering in creative ways. “Science Olympics is an excellent way to engage students in science, engineering and math while introducing them to Lakehead University,” said Dr. Andrew Dean, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies.
Nov 5	Lakehead University receives replacement teepee from community member (Thunder Bay) A generous individual has donated a teepee to Lakehead University after learning of the recent damage done to the teepee located on the University’s ceremonial grounds at its Thunder Bay campus, last week. The donor has chosen to remain anonymous. Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux, Vice-Provost, Aboriginal Initiatives, is very thankful this individual stepped forward with their gift. “This demonstrates how Thunder Bay is a place where people care about what happens in their community,” Dr. Wesley-Esquimaux said. “We will use this teepee at future gatherings, including a community-wide feast which will be held in the spring to foster positive interaction, communication, and unity.”

Nov 1	Maclean’s University Rankings Place Lakehead in Canada’s Top 10 (Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) Maclean’s magazine’s annual University Rankings places Lakehead in second place among Ontario’s primarily undergraduate universities. When compared to all Canadian universities in this category, Lakehead climbed two spots from last year’s results to rank tenth overall.
Nov 1	Lakehead Workshop Offers Engineering Insight for Young Women (Thunder Bay) Go ENG Girl is a free session that encourages young women in grades 7 to 10 to have fun while learning about current programs of study and careers in engineering. This hands-on workshop will allow participants to experience the creativity, imagination and teamwork involved in engineering design. Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate and talk to students, faculty and alumna. Go ENG Girl promotes increased participation of women in engineering. ONWIE – the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering – organizes and hosts Go ENG Girl at 14 locations across the province.
Oct 31	Georgian College and Lakehead University to develop Central Ontario’s only four-year Electrical Engineering degree (Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University and Georgian College have announced plans to develop a four-year degree in electrical engineering that they will deliver jointly in Central Ontario. Students will enrol in both institutions and graduate with a Georgian advanced diploma and Lakehead degree. Graduates will be eligible to apply for a Professional Engineer (PEng) designation. The program was announced at Georgian College’s Barrie Campus, yesterday, by Georgian College President and CEO, Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes, and Lakehead University President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson.
Oct 24	Task Force to Examine Sexual Assault Education, Prevention and Support (Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) As stated in a recent letter to his University community, today Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson, announced the creation of a Presidential Task Force to examine policies pertaining to sexual assault prevention and the support provided to victims on campus. “Universities have a responsibility to promote understanding and positive social change,” said Dr. Stevenson. “And we do that through education.” “This Task Force speaks to the role Universities play in transforming society,” added Dr. Stevenson.

Oct 23	Joint Conference Discusses Northwestern Ontario Economic Development (Thunder Bay) The 2013 Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation’s (CRRF) annual national conference will be held in Thunder Bay at the Airlane Hotel and Conference Centre from Oct. 23-27. Hosted by the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, Nishnawbe Aski Nation, and Lakehead University, the CRRF will discuss new opportunities for growth while reigniting questions about regional development, resource management, governance and co-governance of resources at local and regional levels and with First Nations, Métis and Inuit people.
Oct 18	Lakehead University Ranks First in Ontario (Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is Ontario’s number one research university in the undergraduate category of this year’s annual ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities, as reported by Re$earch Infosource. Lakehead was second in the province in the same category, last year. “This result confirms what we already know at Lakehead University – that research and innovation can be a thriving and growing part of universities our size,” said Provost and Vice-President-Academic, Dr. Rod Hanley. “We have exceptional faculty, students and community partners who are passionate and driven about changing the world.”

Talks will be hosted by experts from Lakehead University who will discuss depression, the history of the residential school program, the beauty of bugs, classical guitar, and the fashion and femininity of flappers from the 1920s.
Sep 27	Lakehead University officials visiting Queen’s Park (Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University officials will visit Queen’s Park on Monday, Sept. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 1 as part of its annual Lobby Days visit with provincial leaders. Lakehead’s President & Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson, began the Lobby Days initiative three years ago in order to highlight Lakehead’s strategic priorities to the Ontario government and opposition parties. Sep 26	Lakehead University’s Morris Lecture Featuring Philosopher Mark Kingwell (Thunder Bay) One of Canada’s most famous philosophers, Mark Kingwell, will be the guest speaker at this year’s Morris Lecture, hosted by Lakehead University’s Department of Philosophy. “Mark Kingwell is Canada's pre-eminent public intellectual, one of our best philosophers, an excellent writer, and a dynamic speaker,” said Lakehead Philosophy Professor Todd Dufresne. “Kingwell’s work combines scholarship and an unusual understanding of contemporary issues ranging from politics to culture. In this presentation, he promises to address a common problem of everyday life: procrastination.
Sep 18	Lakehead’s PACED to Focus on Economic Development in Northwestern Ontario (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University President & Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson, has announced the creation of the President’s Advisory Council on Economic Development (PACED) for Northwestern Ontario. The council will meet regularly, and is comprised of regional industry and business leaders. “PACED’s purpose is to advise me on how Lakehead University can fulfil an even more integral role in the economic development of Northwestern Ontario,” said Dr. Stevenson, who will serve as Chair of the new council. “Council members will help me determine where this University can best contribute to our region and how to measure that success.”
Sep 17	Paterson Foundation Gives $1 million to Lakehead University’s Faculty of Law (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University has graciously accepted a $1 million gift from the Paterson Foundation. The donation is intended to help further ongoing renovations to the Port Arthur Collegiate Institute and the University’s new Faculty of Law. “The Paterson Foundation and the Paterson Family have been supporters of Lakehead University from the beginning,” said Don Paterson, President of The Paterson Foundation. “It is our hope that this support to the University will help to highlight the importance of Lakehead University, particularly the Faculty of Law, in our community and will encourage others both in the community and beyond our borders to become involved.” In recognition of this most generous gift, the Faculty of Law’s main auditorium will be named The Paterson Foundation Faculty of Law Auditorium.
Sep 16	Lakehead University Researchers Receive SSHRC Grants (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University researchers are receiving more than $1.5 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) for exciting projects relating to new media, First Nations renewable energy initiatives and economic development, weight bias and more. SSHRC’s Insight Grants aim to build knowledge and understanding about people, societies and the world by supporting research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Dr. Sandra Jeppesen, Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Lakehead Orillia and coordinator of Media Studies for Social Change, has been awarded an Insight Grant of $497,482 over five years for her program of research, Indymedia 2.0: New Media Activism in the Digital Economy. This is the largest Insight Grant that Lakehead has ever received
Sep 13	A Standing Ovation for Lakehead University’s Donors, Alumni and Community Friends (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University donors, alumni and friends got together to raise funds for student scholarships while enjoying an evening of great food, live music, and a silent auction at Standing Ovation, the institution’s annual fundraiser. “Tonight’s event will assist students in our Faculty of Law’s charter class, which means these scholarships will benefit Northern Ontario by improving access to justice,” said Lee Stuesser, founding Dean of Lakehead’s new Faculty of Law. “Access to justice is of paramount importance to the people of Northern Ontario. It’s the reason our University’s Faculty of Law was established,” Stuesser added.
Sep 4	Lakehead Opens Doors to Ontario’s First New Faculty of Law in 44 Years (Thunder Bay) Ontario’s first Faculty of Law in 44 years officially opened its doors, today, with a large ribbon cutting ceremony at Lakehead’s Port Arthur Collegiate Institute (PACI), home to the University’s newest Faculty. Attendees of this historic event included the school’s first cohort of students and faculty, as well as dignitaries and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. The inaugural class will teach 60 students everything they need to know to be lawyers and more, by focusing on aboriginal law and understanding aboriginal issues, the needs of small practitioners and natural resources law.
