Aug 21	Lakehead University's Digital Information Package Opens Innovative Doors for New Student Orientation (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University has developed digital orientation packages for its new students (2007). As opposed to the former paperbound document, this university-wide initiative will allow incoming students to access valuable university information by USB key, a standardized serial computer interface that allows simplified attachment of peripherals. The USB key is also a companion to the Orientation website.

The event aims to support Crown Wards' completion of high school, as well as their subsequent transition to, and success with, post-secondary education and training.

Aug 9	Lakehead University Orillia Student First to Seek Academic Adventure Abroad (Thunder Bay) Jason Kerr, a second-year HBASc/BEd student at Lakehead's Orillia Campus, will be participating in Lakehead University's International Exchange Program this September. Kerr is enrolled to study at Hogskolan Dalarna University in Sweden for one semester, and is Lakehead's first Orillia student to participate in an international exchange.
Aug 2	New Interdisciplinary Graduate Program Focuses on Northern Environments and Cultures (Thunder Bay) Today, Lakehead University's Faculty of Graduate Studies, in conjunction with the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies, announced a new Master's program in Environmental Studies that is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2007. The program is a Master of Environmental Studies - Northern Environments and Cultures and is the first of its kind in Ontario. It will concentrate on the inhabitants and environments in Canada's Boreal Forest, and as far north as its boundary with the Tundra -- territory described as the "mid-north," "near-north," or "provincial north," and sometimes referred to as the "forgotten north."
Jul 31	Lakehead Shads Develop Zero Waste Technology Product for 2007 National Shad Cup Competition (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's 2007 Shads have determined that the R-Card, a zero waste technology product will be entered into the National Shad Cup, to be held this October in Waterloo, Ontario. This prototype, developed by e-finity, is designed to reduce paper waste generated by consumer receipts, while also simplifying financial record keeping. According to the group's business plan, "e-finity strives to provide ease of use and efficiency to consumers in an environmentally responsible fashion. The R-Card eliminates paper receipt waste while providing a convenient organizational tool for consumers."

Jul 17	Lakehead's LIFT Awardees Inspire Students (Thunder Bay) Today, Lakehead University introduced three recipients of the 2007 Province of Ontario Leadership in Faculty Teaching (LIFT) award: Drs. Seth Agbo (Education), Inderjit Nirdosh (Chemical Engineering), and Tom Potter (Outdoor Recreation Parks and Tourism). The LIFT award, developed by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, recognizes excellent teaching by college and university faculty across Ontario.

These state-of-the-art facilities include the new Fibre-optics lab, the Claude Garton Herbarium, and the Industrial Waste Remediation lab.
Jul 6	Shad Valley Program Schedule Heats Up Through July (Thunder Bay) Lakehead's Shad Valley academic program offers its Shads, 52 high-level Canadian students, a full month of extensive learning and intellectual activity. Fifty of the Shads are entering grade 12 in September, and two have graduated high school. Since its opening day on July 1, Shad Valley's activities have and continue to enthrall everyone involved in this innovative learning program.
Jul 4	More CFI Grants for Lakehead University Researchers:Multi-Data Convergence Lab One of Few to Host, Analyze Educational Data (Thunder Bay) The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) announced today that it has awarded $42,499 to a team of Lakehead University researchers to support the establishment of a laboratory that has the technological capacity to host and analyze educational data in a manner that is not available in most research settings.
Jun 29	Some of Canada's Brightest Kids Converge in Thunder Bay (Thunder Bay) The official welcome of the Shad Valley students takes place on Monday, July 2, at 9:30 a.m. in Lakehead's Senate Chambers. Shad Valley is a program geared to develop innovative leaders of tomorrow. The program runs until July 26, and Shads (participants) live in residence throughout the session.

The new program called SAGE - a gateway to education, has been developed to help three distinct groups of students with the transition to university - new high school graduates, mature students, and Aboriginal students.
Jun 25	Lowly Barbed Wire Stars in Film - Historian Secures Funding for Documentary on Barbed Wire (Thunder Bay) Professor Ron Harpelle of the Department of History has secured a total of $50,000 from two funding agencies for the production of a documentary film on barbed wire. The film's working title is Strands: Barbed Wire and the Control of People and Spaces.

Jun 21	Study on New Omega-3 Supplement Looks at Treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children (Thunder Bay) Researchers at Lakehead University are studying the link between Eye Q, a new Omega-3 fatty acid supplement, and its effects on ADHD. The first clinical trial will be conducted by the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Psychology at Lakehead University, and facilitated by the Children's Centre Thunder Bay.
Jun 20	Telecommunications Journal Cites Lakehead University Professor's Article as "Most Frequently Downloaded" (Thunder Bay) Alexander Serenko, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Business, recently learned that under the category 'most frequently downloaded article in Telecommunications Policy'. Serenko's article has consistently ranked among the top five over a one-year period.
Jun 18	Lakehead University Researchers Awarded $577,495 in SSHRC Grants (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University faculty members have received five new Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) grants this year, totalling $264,995. The projects span various disciplines including Sociology, Economics, and Outdoor Recreation. Grants will be used to build upon each researcher's field of study. In addition, 13 Lakehead graduate students received Canada Graduate Scholarships (11 Master's students, and two PhD students). The total value of these graduate student awards is $312,500.
Jun 15	Lakehead's Centennial Building Re-named in Honour of University's First President (Thunder Bay) Today, students, faculty, staff, and special guests gather at the Centennial Building Courtyard to participate in a dedication ceremony honouring Dr. William (Bill) Tamblyn, Lakehead's first President and Vice Chancellor. The Centennial Building will now be referred to as the William (Bill) Tamblyn Centennial Building. As one of the first major buildings on campus during his presidency, the re-naming is fitting and symbolizes the role that Dr. Tamblyn played in building Lakehead.
