Speaker Bio:
Dr. Erin Gallagher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. She is a Family Physician and Clinical Supervisor at Stonechurch Family Health Centre in Hamilton and a Palliative Care Consultant for the McMaster Family Health Team and Hamilton Health Sciences Hospitals.

Dr. Gallagher serves on palliative care educational committees within McMaster University’s Department of Family Medicine and Department of Medicine and its subspecialties. She is also the Medical Director at Emmanuel House hospice in Hamilton and the Ontario Health West Physician Clinical Co-Lead for Palliative Care.

Her academic interests include public health approaches to palliative care, building palliative care capacity and competencies in primary care, and leadership development for medical trainees.

The Palliative Care Booster Conference brings together health and social care providers, volunteers, students, educators, community partners, and leaders to strengthen knowledge, skills, and connections in palliative care.

This one-day hybrid conference will offer practical learning, meaningful discussion, and opportunities to reflect on how we can continue improving palliative care across care settings and communities.

Our theme this year The Common Thread: Weaving a Palliative Approach Across Care Settings emphasizes that a palliative approach to care may be provided in any setting. As individuals and families move between care settings throughout their journey, these transitions and ‘forks in the road’ can present challenges to continuity of care.

Opening speaker, Dr. Erin Gallagher, will set the stage with her keynote presentation “Dying is Forking Hard: Supporting a Palliative Approach Across Care Settings.”

A BioBlitz is a race to record as many living things as possible: plants, insects, birds, mushrooms, and everything in between. Every photo you snap becomes part of a real biodiversity record of your corner of Ontario. No experience needed, just curiosity and a smartphone.

Optional in-person kickoff: Friday, Sept. 11, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Meet near the Lakehead University Hangar by the pedestrian bridge for guided walks, hands-on ID help, snacks and an info table.

Prefer to go solo? The BioBlitz is self-guided all weekend. Head out any time and explore lawns, tree lines, gardens, trails, ponds, and building edges all great spots to find life.

Thesis title: Secure Routing Protocol for Lossy, Congested, and Attack-Prone Flying Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract: This thesis proposes a secure multipath routing protocol called AOMDV-GAD to improve communication resilience in lossy, congested, and attack-prone FANET environments. The proposed protocol integrates lightweight sender-side packet-loss classification with Genetic Algorithm-based route optimization. Traffic characteristics that are unavailable at the source are measured at the receiving node and conveyed to the source through ICMP feedback, after which the source distinguishes packet loss caused by random wireless conditions, ordinary congestion, and low-rate DoS activity. The proposed protocol was implemented and evaluated using NS-3.35 in a three-dimensional FANET simulation environment. The evaluation considered variations in the number of UAV nodes, percentage of malicious nodes, UAV mobility speed, and simulation duration. The results demonstrate that combining packet-loss classification, DoS-based route screening, congestion-aware evaluation, residual-energy-aware selection, and GA-based route optimization provides a more resilient routing mechanism for highly dynamic FANETs. The proposed approach reduces the probability of repeatedly forwarding packets through compromised, congested, or energy-weak routes and improves the ability of the network to maintain useful communication under adverse conditions.
