The Faculty of Engineering at Lakehead University - Thunder Bay offers a uniquely designed four-year Bachelor of Engineering Degree program in Mechanical Engineering, with a Co-op/Internship option available. The BEng (Mechanical) degree at Lakehead University is accredited through the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB).

Lakehead University - Thunder Bay has the only Faculty of Engineering in Canada where, after completing high school, you can earn a Bachelor of Engineering Degree and an Engineering Technology Diploma in four years.

The Faculty of Engineering- Thunder Bay campus also offers a post-diploma engineering degree program in Mechanical Engineering designed specifically for graduate engineering technologists.

Mechanical Engineering at Lakehead University

The unique structure of Lakehead’s programs at the Thunder Bay campus enables students to earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering in four years while also completing the requirements of a Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma by the end of the second year of their BEng degree program.

The special design of the 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Lakehead University Thunder Bay campus enables qualified engineering technology graduates from accredited Canadian technology programs to enter the BEng program after completing post-diploma transition courses offered in the summer session prior to third year. The Summer Transition program, offered in July and August, is designed to assist qualified engineering technologists make the transition to university studies. As a mechanical engineer you design, simulate, manufacture, assemble and test various systems such as engines, turbines, industrial production equipment, material handling systems, robots, machines and mechanisms of many types. Mechanical engineers are versatile; they are employed in many sectors of the economy such as power generation, manufacturing, transportation, mining, and renewable energy. They employ thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and other engineering sciences to solve complex problems that face our civilization.
 

 

Mechatronics Engineering

Mechatronics Engineering at Lakehead University

Mechatronics Engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering at the intersection of Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineering, as well as Computer Science. It is generally concerned with the design and development of computer-controlled electromechanical systems and products. The curriculum provides the necessary fundamental and applied knowledge about the related engineering disciplines. System-level understanding of the engineering problems is essential for the Program.

The Technology Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering consists of the fundamentals of circuit theory, electronics, mechanics of mechanical materials, programming, sensors and actuators, instrumentation and measurement, control systems, and robotics, thus preparing the graduate Mechatronics Engineering technologist to operate within the fields of design, development, and production planning of electromechanical systems.

The BEng Degree Program in Mechatronics Engineering extends the graduate technologists' capabilities into more advanced conceptual and design phases of engineering. This is accomplished through a series of core and elective courses, including analysis and design of automatic control systems, design of machine elements and systems, industrial robotics, signal processing, and computer applications in the design of common electromechanical systems. Students are also required to combine their technical design knowledge to conceive, design and develop a prototype of a mechatronics system for their degree project, such as a robot, a drone, and an autonomous car.
