Computer science plays a leading role in modern society, shaping our abilities and our future. From streaming music to planning a mission to Mars, the application of computer science offers innovative approaches to new challenges.

Think big as you explore the world of computer science while engaging in one of two focused program streams in Business or Science. The Business Focus provides a path to the Entrepreneurship Certificate from the Faculty of Business, whereas the Science Focus emphasizes Science and Environmental Science electives.

If you're pursuing our co-operative education program, you may have a formal work period assignment in the summers after first and second year (Computer Science 1990, 2990) at the discretion of the Chair of the department. Otherwise, formal work period assignments do not begin until winter term of third year.

Co-op Placement

During your undergrad you will have the opportunity to participate in our co-operative education program to gain rewarding experiences in the industry, acquire practical skills and earn an income to finance your education. We have placed over 700 students with industry partners including IBM, Environment Canada, RIM, Atomic Energy of Canada, the Canadian Grain Commission, CIBC and more.

 

Student Mentorship

We have a full-time faculty member who is dedicated to mentoring first and second year students’ programming skills. This resource is particularly useful if you have limited experience in computer programming and would like one-on-one time with an expert in the field outside of your class and lab time.

 

Specialization

We offer a unique Game Programming Specialization to all Computer Science majors. This specialization teaches you the intricacies of animation, two and three dimensional graphics, gameplay and much more while you develop single, multiplayer and mobile games.

 

Accessible Faculty

Our department is small enough to provide you with direct access to the professors, and individual access to advanced computing equipment. Our faculty is active in its research, and committed to balancing theoretical information with hands-on opportunities. Projects and research papers are regularly integrated into our undergraduate courses.

Computer Science

Computer science has been an active area at Lakehead University for over 25 years. The department resides in the University's Advanced Technology and Academic Centre (ATAC), a striking building that houses many of the University’s computing activities. Faculty, staff, and students are equipped with state-of-the-art computing facilities including smart lecture rooms, labs, and a variety of computing technologies (e.g. Virtual Reality, Parallel Computing).

The Master's program in computer science provides an opportunity to explore the breadth and depth of advanced knowledge in the discipline. Students benefit from a selection of advanced courses and a chance to pursue research that aligns with their interests and aspirations.

Three program options are available to students:

  • Master’s by Course (1 year), which involves courses aligned with the IT industry requirements
  • Master's by Project (2 years), which involves courses aligned with the IT industry needs and also includes a limited research project
  • Master's by Thesis (2 years), which requires fewer courses and involves a more substantial research project

The Course-based master's program is not suitable for pursuing higher graduate programs (e.g. PhD). The Project and Thesis master's programs prepare students for higher graduate programs (e.g. PhD) and may provide them with further industrial experience through available Co-op placement opportunities.

Specialization in Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Computer Science is offering a two-year, thesis-based Master of Science in Computer Science (MSc) program with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Students will develop the skills and knowledge to conduct research in the field of Computer Science with a focus on core AI techniques. Upon completion, students will be able to apply and select appropriate AI algorithms and techniques in a variety of industrial sectors and further advance the AI-related research. Topics will include deep learning, natural language processing, machine learning, image processing, pattern recognition, and other emerging technologies. Finally, students will develop research and application-based ethical awareness.

Please note: The AI Specialization is not eligible for the Co-operative Option.

MSc Computer Science Co-operative Program Option - For Project and Thesis based students, only:

A graduate student will normally be admitted to the co-operative program option after completion of two terms, for a starting date in May. Students are expected to obtain an aggregate of 80% or more and must have taken at least 4 half credit courses (excluding non-credit courses, project and thesis).

Co-op employment for 8 months (two terms) must be successfully completed to satisfy the co-op requirement for the degree. 

Students interested in a co-op placement should inform the Department's Co-op Advisor at least four months in advance of the proposed date of the placement (e.g., by late December for placements beginning in May). The Department's decision as to the suitability of each candidate will be based primarily on academic performance. Successful candidates will work with the Student Success Centre and the university Co-op Coordinator in their search for suitable employment.

Upon completion of the co-op placement, the student will either complete a thesis (Thesis Program option) or complete the Project Program option requirements including the required project course.

NOTE: Students in this program must complete all requirements within six terms (2 years) of continuous registration.  For co-op students, the duration of the co-op placement will be added to the program time limit.

We recommend that International applicants have an overall standing of Second Class - Upper Division or higher.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies will advise all applicants in writing of admission decisions once they are received from the program. The program is directed to graduates from the existing undergraduate Electrical Engineering and Software Engineering programs at Lakehead University and graduates from undergraduate programs at other universities. The program fosters independent research abilities of students. Students will achieve these objectives through a combination of course work and research towards the completion of a thesis.

Engineering - Software

The field of engineering is generally associated with finding solutions for real world problems in an analytical fashion using the math, science and problem-solving skills. At Lakehead we believe engineers must also possess excellent communication skills as well as an understanding of the business, legal, and societal issues that impact development of the technological products and processes required to meet the demands of a global economy.

As a software engineer, you will apply engineering methodologies and good practices for managing the creation of software from conception to the release of the finished product, including analysis, design, coding, testing and deploying software systems.

Software has become a fundamental part of modern society, while continuing to evolve in size, scope, and complexity. As a result, there is an immediate and important need for qualified software engineers who can model entire software and hardware systems, who can lead interdisciplinary project teams of designers and developers, and who can ensure quality, integrity, and safety of the software infrastructure that the public depends on every day.

Our Software Engineering program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). We offer several entry points into our Bachelor of Engineering programs to accommodate you at any stage of your education.

Co-operative/Internship Option

A co-operative/internship option is available for all Engineering programs. You can apply directly, or in either second or third year, and will receive workshops on interviewing, resume preparation and work performance.

You will accumulate at least 16 months of paid, practical work experience and graduate a year later than students enrolled in the regular Bachelor of Engineering program.

Engineering - Electrical

The field of engineering is generally associated with finding solutions for real world problems in an analytical fashion using the math, science and problem-solving skills. At Lakehead we believe engineers must also possess excellent communication skills as well as an understanding of the business, legal, and societal issues that impact development of the technological products and processes required to meet the demands of a global economy.

As an electrical engineer, you will work on the development and manufacturing of electrical and electronics equipment. You will learn the fundamentals of physical science, as well as more practical areas in the design and operation of industrial control systems, communication systems, electronic circuits, and the generation and distribution of electrical power.

Nearly all industries use electricity and electrical devices, making skilled professionals in this field highly desirable all over the world.

Our Electrical Engineering program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). We offer several entry points into our Bachelor of Engineering programs to accommodate you at any stage of your education.

Ontario High School Students
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD);
  • A minimum of 6 Grade 12U or M courses, or equivalent, including program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum 70%* overall final average**

*Higher averages may be required for admission to programs in which the demand for places by qualified applicants exceeds the supply of available spaces.
**Admission averages are calculated using the top 6 Grade 12 U or M courses.  

Other Canadian High School Students
 General Admission Requirements: 
  • Completion of Grade 12 and the Secondary School Diploma (see the Program Specific Prerequisites section for your particular provinces requirements);
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum 70%* overall final average

International Secondary School/ College or University
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Successful graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent (For most countries, the same academic preparation as is required for university entrance in that country is required for consideration. Refer to Admission Requirements by Country.) 
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • Equivalent of a minimum 70% overall final average (Canadian)

Canadian College
 General Admission Requirements:

College transfer applicants who are applying to a program that does not have a college transfer pathway are eligible for admission consideration if they have:

  • Completed a minimum of 1 year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school;
  • Completed the appropriate program-specific prerequisite courses; and
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of 70%. 
Canadian University
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Attended a university and successful completion of university level course work since leaving high school/college;
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum overall average of C or 60%.
Canadian Bible College
 General Admission Requirements:
  • A minimum overall average of C / 60% or equivalent;
  • College must be accredited by the Association of Biblical Higher Education (ABHE);
  • Successfully meets the minimum program specific preparatory course prerequisites at the Grade 12U or M level or equivalent;
  • If not eligible right out of high school, a minimum of two years of full time studies must be completed at the Bible College.

    Program Specific Requirements for Newfoundland/Labrador High School Students:
    English 3201, Advanced Math 3200, Physics 3204, and 1 from Biology 3201, Chemistry 3202 or Communications Technology 3104.
    Program Specific Requirements for Nova Scotia High School Students:
    English 12 or English 12 African Heritage, Pre-Calculus 12 with a minimum grade of 60%, Physics 12 and 1 from Biology 12, Chemistry 12 or Computer Science 12.
    Other Admission Requirements & Important Information:

    In addition to the above requirements, Calculus and Vectors (i.e. MCV4U in Ontario) and Computer Science (ICS4U) is strongly recommended.

    Program Specific Requirements for PEI High School Students:
    English 621A, Pre-Calculus 621B with a minimum grade of 60%, Physics 621A, and 1 from Biology 621A, Chemistry 621A or Computer Studies (CMP621A).
    Program Specific Requirements for Quebec (CEGEP) Students:
    2 English (603 or 604), Linear Algebra I (201-NYC, 201-105, or 201-106) with a minimum grade of 60%, and Physics (2 from: NYA, NYB, or NYC).
    Program Specific Requirements for Quebec (Private) Students:
    English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U) with a minimum grade of 60%, Physics (SPH4U), and 1 from Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Computer Science (ICS4U). Equivalent courses to the Ontario high school prerequisite requirements will be considered.
    Program Specific Requirements for Saskatchewan High School Students:
    English A30 and B30, Pre-Calculus 30 with a minimum grade of 60%, Physics 30, and 1 from Biology 30, Chemistry 30 or Computer Science 30.


The program-specific prerequisite requirements do not apply to college transfer pathways. Refer to the agreements found here for more information on the admission requirements.

An Admissions Officer can provide you with more information on how to enrol in the required prerequisite courses for your program of choice.

There are both a lecture and a lab component to each of your courses, requiring approximately 27 hours of in-class time per week.

Unique Learning Opportunities

Our unique programs offer a combination of hands-on experience as well as a strong theoretical foundation for complex engineering design. Specialized study awaits you in areas such as power systems, power electronics, embedded systems, fuzzy controls, wireless communications and fibre optics.

 

Co-operative/Internship Option

A co-operative/internship option is available for all Engineering programs. You can apply directly, or in either second or third year, and will receive workshops on interviewing, resume preparation and work performance.

You will accumulate at least 16 months of paid, practical work experience and graduate a year later than students enrolled in the regular Bachelor of Engineering program.
