Six student-founded ventures graduated from innovative ideas to tangible businesses at Thursday’s Ascend Accelerator program graduation hosted by Ingenuity, Lakehead’s business incubator.

“This group brought a remarkable level of energy, and their business ideas showcased an exciting variety of perspectives and innovation,” says Ingenuity manager Alyson MacKay, who was thrilled to see the diversity in this year’s businesses, ranging from precision agriculture to AI-powered audio summarization to an online yoga studio.

“As we wrap up another dynamic cohort of the Ascend program, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to each of the teams for their commitment and drive,” she says. “I also want to express my deep gratitude to the mentors and community partners whose guidance and support continue to play a vital role in the success of this program."

Privacy is the priority of James McDonagh (HBSc’25, BSc’25) and Gia Hieu Le’s (HBSc’25) new venture, Conversaver. Their AI-powered audio summarization tool delivers customizable summaries of conversations using strict data protection measures.

James, a second-time Ascend participant and recent Lakehead computer science and mathematics graduate, says the program is an incredible catalyst of growth and learning. “For any aspiring entrepreneur, it’s an experience that gives you the skills, confidence, and support to truly turn your vision into reality. The mentorship and workshops were invaluable, but what really stood out was Alyson MacKay’s unwavering support and commitment to helping founders succeed.”

Vivideye Concepts is another of the new student-led business ventures supported by Ascend. Launched by Rambert Shaw (MSc’25), Vivideye produces cinematic, story-driven videos that elevate brands, capture attention, and drive results with a turnaround time of only three business days.

Tony Braxton Tchio Ngoumeza, a software engineering student, is the founder of GreenShade, a precision agriculture system that leverages machine learning to optimize farming practices. By integrating data-driven analysis and predictive modeling, GreenShade is poised to help farmers maximize yield, improve resource efficiency, and identify the most suitable crops for their specific environment and climate.

Mackenzie SmithConcurrent Education student, Mackenzie Smith started the online yoga studio, Aurae & Company, to blend mindfulness and self-care with accessibility. With a flexible, “practice anywhere” ethos, Aurae invites users to reconnect with themselves and move with intention -  no matter where they are.

Created by fourth-year mechanical engineering student Vince Butrico and teacher-turned developer Michael Gagliardil, SkillJa provides a unified space to bring together athletes and coaches. Built by athletes for athletes, SkillJa helps athletes find trusted coaches across 35+ sports, while coaches can showcase their expertise, manage bookings, and grow their business.

Vince Butrico Magdy Alanani’s (PhD’24) Teknu Solutions is a research-driven startup providing advanced engineering solutions for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector. This company integrates structural engineering expertise with AI and optimization algorithms to streamline and enhance building design. By improving material efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and accelerating early-stage design decisions, Teknu Solutions builds the foundation for smarter, more sustainable structural design.

Dr. Andrew P. Dean, Vice-President, Research and Innovation congratulated the graduates.

“The graduation of our seventh Ingenuity Ascend cohort is a testament to the incredible entrepreneurial spirit thriving at Lakehead University,” he says. “Over the past 10 weeks, our graduating students have embraced the opportunities and challenges of turning their ideas into market-ready businesses.”

“Their innovative solutions have addressed gaps in the market, and I'm confident these diverse ventures will contribute to our region's economic growth.”

The ventures accepted to this year’s 10-week program received funding from the John Dobson Foundation, mentorship, and weekly workshops to develop their businesses. The teams were held accountable for reaching milestone goals as they progressed on their entrepreneurial journeys.

A $132,000 award from the John Dobson Foundation’s Dobson Entrepreneurship Excellence Project will help Lakehead University train future entrepreneurs through Ingenuity’s Ascend Accelerator program.

With the support of the Dobson Entrepreneurship Excellence Project Award (DEEPA), the Ingenuity incubator space will fund 24 business ideas over the next two years and expand Ascend Accelerator programming to Lakehead’s Orillia Campus.

“The Ascend Accelerator program is one of Ingenuity’s biggest success stories,” said manager Alyson MacKay. “I am beyond excited that we’ll be able to engage students year-round through Ascend Accelerator and support our entrepreneurially-minded students in Orillia – an opportunity we have not had until now.”

Launched in 2020, the Ascend Accelerator program supports entrepreneurial-minded students and alumni who are looking to transition an idea into a business opportunity or accelerate the growth and development of their early-stage start-up.

The program provides entrepreneurs access to mentorship, develops their business knowledge, and creates accountability through milestone goal creation.

“Ascend also delivers seed funding to student entrepreneurs to support business development costs,” explained MacKay.

To date, the program has run three cohorts and supported 12 business ideas, nine of which are still active.

"Lakehead University is fortunate to have the support of the John Dobson Foundation,” stated Dr. Andrew Dean, Vice-President, Research and Innovation. “The Ascend Accelerator program is important to both support and facilitate the growth of our entrepreneurial students. We are excited to see where this year's cohort of participants take their business ideas thanks to the support of this increased funding.”

Lakehead University recently celebrated graduates from its fourth cohort of the Ascend Accelerator program, hosted by the Ingenuity incubator space.

Sidney HowlettThis year’s cohort saw four student-led Thunder Bay and Orillia-based ventures navigate their way through the entrepreneurial journey. The businesses range from augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) software development to sustainability consulting services, and Airbnb cleaning solutions.

Along with funding from the John Dobson Foundation, students were provided with a platform to transform their ideas into tangible realities. Participants received mentorship and weekly workshops and were held accountable to milestone goals created over the 10-week program, which ran from January to March.

Ingenuity manager Alyson MacKay said it was exciting to help the students develop their businesses. “I continue to be amazed at the talent that we are seeing in our students. The level of commitment and passion I have seen from these participants is incredible and I look forward to continuing to work with them,” she said.

Nestar’s user-friendly website provides automatic payment facilities, electronic lease signing, and a sophisticated matching system with integrated background checks to connect the right tenants with the right landlords. The business is committed to setting new standards in the rental industry and transforming the way people rent and manage properties in Thunder Bay.

“The Ascend Accelerator program has had a profound impact on our company, allowing us to navigate challenges and seize opportunities we never thought possible,” Sanchez said.

“Their spaces, webinars, and connections provided us with the resources and knowledge needed to develop, launch and grow our business. We are truly grateful for their dedication to our success and recognize the countless entrepreneurs who would greatly benefit from this program. Thank you for believing in us and helping us turn our vision into reality.”

Sidney Howlett started Sidney Howlett Consulting in Orillia to help organizations navigate the complex landscape of climate action. Lakehead recently celebrated the graduates from its third cohort of the Ascend Accelerator boot-camp-style program, hosted by the Ingenuity incubator space.

Along with FedNor funding, participants in the student-based business ventures received mentorship and weekly workshops. They were held accountable to milestone goals created over the 10-week program, which ran from May 8 to July 14.

This year the cohort included four participants who each explored a separate business venture. Ingenuity manager Alyson MacKay said it was exciting to help the students develop their businesses.

“I can’t believe the third cohort is coming to an end – it's amazing how fast the 10 weeks went by,” MacKay said.

“I’m incredibly proud of all the hard work the students have put into their business ideas and am looking forward to celebrating their success. Their commitment and passion drove the energy in the Ascend program and they’ve come a long way since the first week.”

Dr. Andrew P. Dean, Vice-President, Research and Innovation, congratulated the participants for reaching graduation.

"By providing financial support and access to mentors, Ingenuity Ascend offers a great platform for Lakehead students to transform their ideas into reality and launch their unique business ventures,” he said.

“From using thermal sensors to detect falls to developing automated lockers for artists and entrepreneurs to sell their products, our graduating entrepreneurs have solved gaps in the market and are contributing to the growth of our regional economy.

“Once again, I’d like to congratulate the graduates, and I wish you all the best as you ascend your businesses to the next level,” Dr. Dean said.

Louis Johnson’s project, Liaison, implements a completely automated locker system that allows artists and entrepreneurs to seamlessly market and sell their crafts, products, or services in high foot-traffic venues.

Vendors can simply load their lockers with merchandise and consumers can conveniently purchase them with the push of a button. This solution now gives vendors the opportunity to create more, invest more, and profit more.

“This year's Ascend program hosted by Ingenuity has been an unforgettable experience,” Johnson said.

“As a physics graduate and a mechanical engineering student with no business background, I was doubtful of my capabilities to become an entrepreneur.

“However, over these past 10 weeks I wasn't just exposed to all of the essential aspects of starting a business but was taken through the step-by-step process of how to implement them.

“Alongside the valuable information I've gained from this program, I was able to network with other like-minded entrepreneurs, which created an environment where everyone was able to feed off of each other’s ideas to create innovative solutions.

“Turning your passion into a business is an extremely difficult process, but with guidance and support from Ingenuity the self-doubt started to fade and the end goal became much more attainable,” Johnson added.

Christopher Silver’s project, Silver Vantage Software, uses computer vision and machine learning to create a thermal fall detection system for elderly people. A thermal sensor will monitor a room, sending an alert to a family member or personal support worker if a fall is detected.

Allan Alias is launching Pixel Point, a comprehensive social media management and real estate media solution provider that specializes in management and digital marketing. Pixel Point offers a range of services from content creation to paid ads management.

Asha Nurse created Silver Sands Nail Bar, a home-based and mobile nail salon in Thunder Bay that offers gel polish, gel extensions, and overlays. It specializes in the newest trends in the nail industry.

As a mobile salon, Silver Sands takes the hassle out of finding a nail technician by bringing their services directly to you. The mission of Silver Sands is to understand and meet the needs of its clients, especially young people.
