MINUTES
Friday, October 13th, 2023
A meeting of the Faculty Council was held on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 10:00 am via Zoom.

1.
Approval of Agenda
 It was moved by L. Chambers and seconded by A. Guttman that the agenda be approved.
        Carried.

2.
Approval of Minutes
Approval of the minutes from September 15, 2023.  (J. Jarman and seconded by C. Sanders)
The minutes were accepted as presented.
        
3.
Business Arising from the Minutes
Type A and B Courses:
A. Carastathis stated that both Type A and B courses are listed in the current online calendar as requirements for all first-year students in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.  The online Calendar also makes references to Group I and Group II courses (which no longer exist).  A short discussion followed and it was decided to request removal of any references to Group I and II courses from the regulations (which can be done by Ashley Beda). Departments may want to make calendar changes to the existing Type A and B requirements in their programs.

Calendar Changes
i)  Interdisciplinary Studies
It was moved by J. Jarman and seconded by C. Sanders that the following calendar change request be
approved.
2023-SOC-8365:  Cross-List VISU 2031 with MDST.
        Carried.

ii)  Religious Studies
It was moved by B. Birmingham and seconded by J. Jarman that the following calendar change request
be approved with the suggested amendments.
2023-SOC-8366:  Course-Modification-UG-Religious Studies-Change to Course Description-Dean of
SS&H.
        Carried.

iii)  Sociology
It was moved by C. Sanders and seconded by J. Jarman that the following calendar change request be
approved with the suggested amendments.
2023-SOC-8226-A:  Modifications-UG-Sociology Programs-Requiring more SOCI relevant course Requirements.
        Carried.

iv)  Additional Dean:  Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies
It was moved by B. Birmingham and seconded by C. Sanders that the following calendar change request
be approved.
2023-HBS-8354:  Programs-Modifications-GR-Health Sciences-Adding Special Topics course
        Carried.

Department/School Requests.
A. Carastathis mentioned that if anyone was interested in having guest speakers or discussions on varied topics in future at our Council meetings to send your request to S. Viitala.
 
5.2
Department/School Reports.
i)  Languages
C. Sanders, on behalf of I. Lemée. stated that the Department of Languages will be holding their Cultural Night on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in The Study.  Everyone is welcome.!

ii)  Music
A. Carastathis announced that the next LUMINA concert will feature Ms. Teresa Suen Campbell on Harp.  This event will take place on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 12:30 pm in the Jean McNulty Recital Hall.

iii)  Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism
L. Potvin said that Certifications for Bronze Cross Life Guards and First Aid will be held during reaching week in the winter term.  There will also be a wilderness course held in that term as well.  Dates for this event will be forthcoming.

iv)  Philosophy
R. Maundrell announced that Dr. Fuhito Endo will be giving a public talk as part of the Morris Public Lecture series.  The event will take place on Thursday, October 19, 2023, in ATAC 2021, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.

v)  Political Science
C. Sanders announced that there will be a public talk given by Dr. Zuba Wai as part of the Political Science Speaker Series.  The talk will take place on Monday, October 16, 2023, in UC 1017 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.  Everyone is welcome.!

vi)  Visual Arts
S. Shahsahabi stated that there will be lectures and workshops held during the One Thousand Miles Apart event taking place from Friday, October 13 to Sunday, October 15, 2023.  The guest speakers are Arlynn Nobel, Denise Smith and Katie Lemieux.  Both D. Smith and K. Lemieux are graduates of the Visual Arts program at Lakehead.  All will be hosting their own individual workshops.

Dean’s Report.
October 13, 2023
The transition to the new dean, G. Bonifacio, will begin on November 1, 2023.  We will be sure to give her a warm welcome.
The Board of Governors passed a deficit budget on October 12, 2023.  The University is still waiting for the results from the Blue Ribbon Panel and the Higher Education panel.
Both the PTR and Merit processes are now underway.  I will manage the fall tenure and renewal process, and G. Bonifacio will oversee the Merit process.
Thank you to those colleagues who are currently involved in LUFA bargaining.
Thank you to everyone, and I look forward to working with you as your colleague.

A. Carastathis thanked B. Birmingham for all her hard work and strong leadership over her five-year term as Dean.  As well, he noted her unwavering support for faculty members and their departments/school.
