Speaker Bio: Ms. Takako Ito Joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) in 1985. Her overseas postings include Embassies in Canada (1988-1991), Malaysia (2001-2003), Indonesia (2010-2011), the Mission of Japan to the United Nations in NY (1997-2001) and the Mission of Japan to ASEAN as Deputy Chief of Mission (2011-2014). At home, she served as Principal Deputy Director for Asia Europe Partnership Division (2003-2005), Negotiator for Economic Partnership Agreement (2005-2007), Principal Deputy Director for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Division concurrently Transnational Crimes Division (2007- 2009), Director of Development Assistance Policy Planning Division (2009-2010), Assistant Press Secretary and Director of International Press Division (2014-2016), and Assistant Chief of Protocol of MOFA as well as Master of the Ceremonies at Imperial Household Agency (2016-2017). She has received the Order of Civil Merit (Encomienda) from the Kingdom of Spain and the Order of the Crown (Officer) from the Kingdom of Belgium.

On 16 September at 7:30 pm, John Foster will examine Canadian oil in a global context – an ongoing rivalry among world powers and regional countries for control of oil and natural gas. Instancing Iran, Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela, he will illuminate petroleum-related reasons for government actions that are rarely discussed publicly.

Speaker Bio: As an international oil economist, John Foster witnessed the geopolitics of petroleum in more than 30 countries. His experience includes positions with the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, BP group and Petro-Canada in three capital cities – London, Washington DC and Ottawa. He grew up in London England, graduating in economics and law from Cambridge University. In the past decade, he has given talks across Canada on petroleum rivalries and conflicts, and authored articles in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and elsewhere, and been interviewed on radio and TV.

Join us on 4 April at 7:30 pm in ATAC 1010 and OA2006, to hear Ben Rowswell speak on "Meeting the Challenge of Populism  at Home and Abroad." Orillia will have videoconferencing for the talk in OA 2006.

Ben Rowswell has 25 years of experience as a practitioner of international relations and is a pioneer in the practice of digital diplomacy. In his last position as Ambassador to Venezuela, he experienced the destructive power of modern populism.

Other positions over his career include serving with the United Nations in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993, as Canada’s first diplomatic envoy to Baghdad, Iraq, after the fall of Saddam Hussein, and as the head of the NATO Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kandahar at the height of Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan.

Ben has also advised top levels of government on international strategy in the Privy Council Office during the tenures of Jean Chrétien and Stephen Harper, and at the Washington DC Center for Strategic and International Studies from 2003 to 2004.

2019 marks the fifth year the student History Society at Lakehead University (LUHS) is hosting its year end event.

The semi-formal at the Thunder Bay Museum will have all three floors open to you during the evening. An amazing array of finger foods will be served.

Ticket sales on campus will be held outside of the University Main Cafeteria, March 11 and 12 from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
