International Education Week

A Message from James Aldridge (Vice Provost, International)

Welcome to International Education Week!

Headshot of James Aldridge

Lakehead University International (LUI) is excited and proud to again host International Education Week (IEW) at Lakehead University. An annual event celebrated around the world during the third week of November, this year's IEW provides an opportunity to showcase the cultural diversity of our wonderful international student population, inform the Lakehead community about our efforts to internationalize Lakehead’s campuses and communities, and highlight the importance of international education.

Interactive in-person and online sessions hosted by the staff, faculty, and students are designed to enlighten participants, celebrate cultural diversity, and introduce opportunities for internationalization through study and work abroad. I want to encourage all members of the Lakehead university community to get involved with IEW 2022 and celebrate our amazing international students and campuses.

In keeping with our vision to develop inter-culturally competent and socially engaged leaders through transformative global experiences, LUI is working hard to honour the many cultures that make our communities so vibrant, and to engage in lots of exciting knowledge-sharing and skill-building. There will be panel discussions and presentations exploring many topics including a broad range of short- and longer-term study abroad opportunities. And there will be lots of fun! From movie night and trivia challenges to art and poetry, Lakehead IEW offers something new and interesting for everyone.

Below please find the schedule of events and how you can register, as well as a list of international resources and relevant contact information. Register now and Zoom will send you a reminder! We look forward to spending time with you!

Lakehead Makes Leaders (LML) builds soft skills such as leadership, interpersonal skills, negotiation, entrepreneurship, self-awareness, the ability to accept and employ constructive feedback, how to handle performance reviews, strong cross-cultural and professional communication skills, and much more. Each module supports Lakehead University students in gaining an edge in their career preparation and career-related employment following the completion of their academic program at Lakehead University.

Your First Steps Into Lakehead University

Hosted by the English Language Centre (ELC) Sponsored Group Coordinator, this video offers an insight into the steps ELC short-term groups follow from the moment they arrive in Thunder Bay to the moment they come to the ELC on their first day of classes. The video can be of benefit to students planning to attend any of the ELC programs. In this way, they will be better prepared for their arrival. Similarly, the video informs the local community of the first steps ELC students take when settling in Thunder Bay.

Video: ELC Tour hosted by Crystal Belanger

Want to take a trip around the world? Come take a virtual tour of the murals displayed at The English Language Centre where you can discover the world all in one place! Crystal Belanger, the Administrative Manager of the centre, who is also a local artist, will walk you through the centre's murals and tell you a little about each one. Painted by Lakehead staff, students and locals, each pillar in the centre's main hallway is the creation of their culture, experiences and knowledge.
