Frequently Asked Questions

For Students

How is my host family selected?

We use the information provided in your application to better understand your preferences, needs, and expectations. Our team then reviews our network of approved host families to identify the best possible match for your stay in your preferred community.

How much does staying in homestay cost?

The cost is $1000/month with three meals per day, $800/ month without meals, $400 one time placement fee.

When will I receive my host family information?

Once we receive your application, we will begin searching for a suitable host family match. After a match has been confirmed, we will provide you with a Host Family Profile, which includes information about the home, family members, interests, and preferred activities. Please note that an interview with the host family may be required.

Can I contact my host family before I arrive?

Yes. Your Host Family Profile will include the host family’s phone number and email address. We encourage you to connect with them before your arrival so you can introduce yourself, ask questions, and begin getting comfortable with your new home. Connecting in advance can help make your first meeting easier and more welcoming.

Can I use a computer or internet at my homestay?

Some host families may have a computer available, but you should always ask for permission before using it. Please be respectful and do not download files, install programs, change settings, or modify passwords on your host family’s device.

If you have your own laptop or mobile device, please discuss internet rules with your host family. Some homes may have monthly data limits, so you should ask before streaming videos, playing online games, or downloading large files. You may be responsible for extra charges caused by your internet use.

Should I clean my room and shared areas?

Yes. Students are expected to keep their own room clean and tidy. Expectations for shared areas, such as the kitchen, bathroom, or living room, may vary by household.

We recommend speaking with your host family on your first day to understand their house rules and expectations. Your host family will guide you on how to respectfully share and maintain common spaces.

What if I do not like the food or disagree with the house rules?

We understand that adjusting to a new home, food, and household routines can take time. If you have concerns, we encourage you to communicate respectfully with your host family.

If you feel uncomfortable discussing something directly, please contact us at slc.elc@lakeheadu.ca. We can provide guidance, help you communicate your concerns, and support both you and your host family in creating a positive homestay experience.

What should I do if I feel uncomfortable with my host family?

Although we do our best to create a suitable match, misunderstandings, personality differences, or other concerns may sometimes arise.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us as soon as possible so we can help address the situation. Our goal is to support you and ensure you have a positive homestay experience. Please note that additional fees may apply if a host family change is requested.

What should I do if I need to cancel or leave earlier than planned?

We understand that plans may change unexpectedly. If you need to cancel your stay or return home earlier than expected, please contact us slc.elc@lakeheadu.ca as soon as possible so we can inform your host family and assist with the next steps.

Can I extend my homestay?

Yes. Please contact us slc.elc@lakeheadu.ca if you would like to extend your stay. We will check your host family’s availability and let you know if an extension is possible. If approved, we will provide information about any additional fees and continue supporting you for the remainder of your stay.

For Host Families

Are host families expected to host for the full program duration?

Yes. Host families are generally expected to host students for the full length of the program. Since program lengths may vary, we will share the expected duration with you before confirming each hosting opportunity.

We understand that circumstances can change. If something unexpected happens, please contact the Homestay Coordinator as soon as possible. The Coordinator will work with you and the student to discuss the situation and help find an appropriate solution.

What is the compensation for host families?

We offer competitive compensation rates $1,000 with meal plan, $800 without meal plan.

What is the selection process for a host family?

In-person interviews, Criminal Record Check (CRC), house inspection, and contracts are necessary. For more details, please contact us at international.homestay@lakeheadu.ca

What should I do if my household information changes?

Please contact us at international.homestay@lakeheadu.ca as soon as possible if there are any changes to your home or household, such as hosting another student, getting a new pet, or updating your email address or phone number.

Keeping your information current helps us support both host families and students effectively.

What should hosts do if challenges arise?

We want both students and host families to have a positive and rewarding homestay experience. If you experience any challenges while hosting, please contact us so we can discuss the situation and provide support.

Many concerns can be resolved early through clear communication, expectation-setting, and mediation. The Lakehead University Homestay team is here to guide and support you, whether you are hosting for the first time or have hosted before.

How will I receive payment?

Payment arrangements depend on the type of student placement. For sponsored students, host families will receive payment directly from the English Language Centre (ELC). For non-sponsored students, payment will be made directly by the student to the host family.
