One of the benefits of the computer science program at Lakehead is that it gives you the option of taking one of three different paths depending on what interests you. There are different paths such as the science option for people who enjoy mathematics, the hardware option for people who enjoy physics, and the business option for people who are interested in both business and computer science. I decided to take the computer science hardware option since I like to mix computer science with other disciplines such as physics.

There are also great research opportunities for undergraduate students at Lakehead. I have worked at the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI) for two summers working on research projects involving High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and Hyperpolarized Gas MRI. My roles in these projects have included modifying high-performance computer simulations and writing software to analyze MRI images.

Lakehead's co-op program is also a great way to gain experience. Having real-world work experience on your resume will put you far ahead of other candidates in the competitive job market. I have completed one co-op term so far with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (formerly Atomic Energy of Canada Limited) helping to set up high-performance computing software. The experience I have gained through research opportunities and my co-op placement has been extremely valuable to both my education and my career path.
