On November 26th, 2020, Lakehead confirmed its leadership on climate change by announcing it is divesting its endowment of fossil fuel stocks, the sixth Canadian university to do so. Building on this accomplishment and recognizing the need for more bold steps to tackle climate change, Lakehead University is declaring the 2021/2022 academic year the Year of Climate Action (YOCA).
Join us on Tuesday, September 14, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm for the official Lakehead University Year of Climate Action launch.
The evening will feature opening remarks from the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), Dr. David Barnett. Students, faculty, and staff will share how they are getting involved in the YOCA. Join us to learn more about the YOCA, how you can get involved, and our #36ClimateActions campaign. Dr. Andrew Dean, Vice-President Research and Innovation, and Dr. Lindsay Galway, Canada Research Chair in Socio-Ecological Health, will MC the event.
The evening will culminate with a keynote presentation from Clayton Thomas-Müller, campaigner, media producer, organizer, facilitator, public speaker and author on Indigenous rights and environmental and economic justice. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A.

More about Clayton Thomas-Müller:
Clayton Thomas-Müller is a member of the Treaty #6 based Mathias Colomb Cree Nation also known as Pukatawagan located in Northern Manitoba, Canada. Based in Winnipeg, Clayton is a senior campaign specialist with 350.org.
Clayton is involved in many initiatives to support the building of an inclusive global movement for energy and climate justice. He serves on the board of the Bioneers and the Wildfire Project.
He has been recognized by Yes Magazine as a Climate Hero and is featured as one of ten international human rights defenders in the National Canadian Museum for Human Rights. He has campaigned across Canada, Alaska and the lower 48 states organizing in hundreds of First Nations, Alaska Native and Native American communities to support Indigenous Peoples to defend their territories against the encroachment of the fossil fuel industry with a special focus on stopping the expansion of the Canadian tar sands and its associated pipelines.
Clayton is a campaigner, award-winning film director, media producer, organizer, facilitator, public speaker and author on Indigenous rights and environmental & economic justice.

About the Session
Alongside the COVID-19 pandemic is a divisive, attention-grabbing, obsession-inducing infodemic. Moving beyond the discourse of fake vs real news, we probe the relative invisibility of algorithms and the hidden-in-plain-sight codes and conventions of old and new media to provide some perspectives and frames for understanding major news events of 2020.

This session will explore current research on New Immigrant populations in Northern Ontario, with a focus on injury, mental health, welcoming, and employment. A discussion of research challenges will also be included. The panel includes both researchers and community partners.

About the Session
For more than 50 years, the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area in Northwestern Ontario has studied whole lakes and their watersheds to understand how human populations affect our freshwaters. This globally unique organization continues to tackle important issues like habitat restoration, plastics, oil spills, climate change and pharmaceuticals all while focusing on non-invasive monitoring techniques.

St. Joseph’s Care Group offers unique opportunities for Indigenous health research collaborations. Hear from researchers who have partnered with St. Joseph’s Care Group, and learn about opportunities for Indigenous-focused research within the areas of mental health, rehabilitation, and long-term care. An overview of the research supports offered by St. Joseph’s Care Group will also be provided.
