(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University donors, alumni and friends got together to raise funds for student scholarships while enjoying an evening of great food, live music, and a silent auction at Standing Ovation, the institution’s annual fundraiser. “Tonight’s event will assist students in our Faculty of Law’s charter class, which means these scholarships will benefit Northern Ontario by improving access to justice,” said Lee Stuesser, founding Dean of Lakehead’s new Faculty of Law. “Access to justice is of paramount importance to the people of Northern Ontario. It’s the reason our University’s Faculty of Law was established,” Stuesser added.

(Thunder Bay) Ontario’s first Faculty of Law in 44 years officially opened its doors, today, with a large ribbon cutting ceremony at Lakehead’s Port Arthur Collegiate Institute (PACI), home to the University’s newest Faculty. Attendees of this historic event included the school’s first cohort of students and faculty, as well as dignitaries and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. The inaugural class will teach 60 students everything they need to know to be lawyers and more, by focusing on aboriginal law and understanding aboriginal issues, the needs of small practitioners and natural resources law.

(Thunder Bay) Dr. Harvey Lemelin’s latest book, From Talk to Action: How Tourism is Changing the Polar Regions, discusses how polar tourism has become a global industry. “The book is based on outcomes from the third International Polar Tourism Research Network Conference held in the small Inuit community of Nain, Nunatsiavut in 2012. We are particularly proud of these proceedings since they featured the voice of Nunatsiavut residents, consultants, graduate students, and academics,” said Dr. Lemelin, the Lakehead University Research Chair in Parks and Protected Areas.

Hosted by Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI), CSSTC 2013 brings together the brightest Canadian minds from universities, research institutions and industries to discuss the latest semiconductor research.

(Thunder Bay) The RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament is a success each year thanks to the support of title sponsor RBC and presenting sponsor Wasaya Airways. The annual RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament raises funds in order for students to live their dreams by pursuing their post-secondary education. “Cost should not be a barrier to education,” said Mark Tilbury, Director, Alumni and Community Relations at Lakehead University. “Post-secondary education plays an important role in a person’s future. This support shows that RBC and Wasaya Airways are extremely community-minded and we thank them for that.”

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Civil Engineering students placed in the top 10 at the 2013 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at Seattle’s University of Washington. The Lakehead team was one of 49 universities and colleges at the invitation-only competition. Lakehead’s five-member team was invited in March after winning the Mid-West Regional Competition at Iowa State University. “The steel bridge competition provides students with real engineering experience: planning and design, team work, essential problem solving skills and the opportunity to compete against other schools from Canada, the US and Mexico,” said Raquel Almeida, one of the students on the team.

Participants will visit Lakehead’s residence, meet upper-year students, faculty and staff, and take part in programming at this two-day orientation. EDGE will occur Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 on the Thunder Bay campus. “EDGE is the perfect opportunity for students and family members to explore our beautiful campus, discover what Lakehead has to offer, and participate in activities designed to ease the transition to university,” said Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson.
