(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health (CERAH), in partnership with the Kenora Chiefs' Advisory and the Fort Frances-based Gizhewaadiziwin Health Access Centre, has received $100,000 from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) for a project entitled Improving End-of-Life Care for Aboriginal Elders with Cancer and other Chronic Diseases.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Hollings, Associate Professor of Geology, is the recipient of the 2008 William Harvey Gross Award. The award - a major honour in the field of geology - was presented by the Mineral Deposits Division (MDD) of the Geological Association of Canada at an annual luncheon held in Quebec City in May.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is gearing up for another Convocation, at which 1,800 graduands will receive their degrees. Two ceremonies will take place on Saturday, May 31. The first ceremony begins at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium at 9:00 a.m., and the second at 2:30 p.m.

The research projects span various disciplines, some of which include Sociology, Economics, Business Administration, Education, Psychology, History, Philosophy, and Social Work.

(Thunder Bay) Today, Industry Minister Jim Prentice announced approximately $535 million in Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Canada (NSERC) funding and scholarships, to be distributed to more than 9,900 professors and students at more than 60 higher education institutions across Canada. Lakehead University is a proud recipient of this funding. Twenty-two of its researchers, 11 graduate students, and 21 undergraduate students have been awarded NSERC's 2008 Discovery Grants, Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grants, Postgraduate Scholarships, or Undergraduate Student Research Awards totalling $2,449,462.

(Thunder Bay) Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, announced the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) spring 2008 national funding - allocated between July 1, 2007, and January 31, 2008. Two Lakehead University researchers have received this funding, for a total of $672,635.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Karen Poole, Director of Nursing, and Pat Sevean, School of Nursing Professor, have received the 2008 Teaching Innovation Award, and are the only recipients in this category. Developed this year by the Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing, the award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to nursing education through innovative teaching practice.

(Thunder Bay) As an institution with a longstanding commitment to fostering leadership and development among its Aboriginal students, Lakehead University is pleased to announce the accreditation of an Honours B.Ed. (Aboriginal) program - the only one of its kind in Canada. Offered this fall, the four-year, stand-alone program prepares people of Aboriginal ancestry to become fully certified teachers.
