Sep 11	Sour Gas may be Key to Sweet Disease: Research sheds light on diabetes pathogenesis and management (Thunder Bay) Dr. Rui Wang, Lakehead University Vice-President (Research), recently received a new Operating Grant from the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA), valued at $79,225 for his project entitled 'Hydrogen sulfide and pancreatic insulin metabolism.' This research grant resulted from a national competition and was ranked as an excellent application. It is also the first research grant received by Lakehead University for diabetes research from CDA.

Aug 25	Lakehead Researcher receives Maureen Andrew New Investigator Scholarship Award for Research Excellence (Thunder Bay) A researcher from Lakehead University was recently awarded $10,000 from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Dr. Guangdong Yang, a Research Assistant Professor at the School of Kinesiology, will receive the 2009/2010 Dr. Maureen Andrew New Investigator Scholarship Award commencing July 1, 2009, for a research project entitled 'Regulation of cystathionine gamma-lyase expression in vascular smooth muscle cells.'

Aug 20	New Aboriginal Alumni Chapter Established (Thunder Bay) A new social network will be launched on Tuesday, August 25, 2009, when the Alumni Association of Lakehead University and the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives announce the establishment of the Aboriginal Alumni Chapter of Lakehead University. This announcement will take place during a special gathering in the Lakehead University Faculty Lounge from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Aug 19	Lakehead University and Confederation College Collaborative Nursing Program Achieves Significant Milestone (Thunder Bay) Representatives from Lakehead University and Confederation College announced today that the Collaborative Nursing Program curriculum has received national accreditation from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN). Since 1987 CASN accreditation promotes excellence in nursing education programs, and is the national accrediting body for nursing education in Canada. The purpose of accreditation is to encourage excellence in nursing education according to fundamental qualities and standards established by academic nursing to best meet the need of the Canadian population for nursing health care.
Aug 18	Bell Presents Lakehead Celebrates….2009 featuring Buffy Sainte-Marie on September 16 (Thunder Bay) The last time Buffy Sainte-Marie came to Lakehead University she stood before Class 2000 at the Community Auditorium to accept an Honorary Doctor of Letters. The mood was electric and the air full of young graduands eager to hear words of wisdom from a cultural icon, to inspire and guide them as they made their way out into the 'real world.'
Aug 6	Lakehead Receives Environment Canada Research Funding (Orillia) e Government of Canada is investing $30 million over 5 years to help restore the health of Lake Simcoe through an initiative called the Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund administered by Environment Canada. Environment Canada, which calls for proposals for this funding twice per year, this week announced that Lakehead University Orillia professors, Dr. Nandakumar Kanavillil, Dr. Sreekumari Kurissery and Dr. Mary Thornbush along with Dr. Peter Lee of Lakehead Thunder Bay have been awarded $165,000 for a research proposal they submitted.
Aug 5	Lakehead Forestry Professors Receive Project Grants (Thunder Bay) Ontario is making significant investments in skilled trades and forestry in Thunder Bay through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). Dr. Han Chen and Dr. Mathew Leitch from the Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Environment received project grants from the NOHFC: Emerging Technology Program.
Jul 31	Orillia Campus Researchers investigate Lake Simcoe Health (Thunder Bay) This fall, three Orillia campus researchers and one Thunder Bay campus researcher will be funded $165,000 over the next two years by Environment Canada and its Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund (LSCUF) to study the role of wetlands as a nutrient buffer.
Jul 28	Talented New Engineering Graduates Win First Place in National Competition (Thunder Bay) Lakehead engineering graduates Domenic Arcuri, Graham Sled, and Craig West have earned first place in the 2009 CGS Undergraduate Report Competition. Their winning degree project, entitled 'Utilization of coal/biomass fly ash and bentonite as a remediation barrier for acid mine drainage,' was completed under the supervision of Dr. Eltayeb Mohamedelhassan.

Jul 13	Lakehead University Appoints Dean of Health and Behavioural Sciences (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is pleased to announce the appointment of Lori Livingston to the position of Dean of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, effective July 1, 2009. Dr. Livingston was most recently a faculty member at Dalhousie University since 2000, serving in the Faculty of Health Professions.
Jul 13	Graduate Research Earns Prestigious CIHR Award (Thunder Bay) Sacha Dubois, a Lakehead University Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate, was awarded the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Aging Age+ Award for his paper titled 'The Impact of Benzodiazepines on Safe Driving.'This paper was part of Dubois' MPH thesis and was co-authored by Dr. Michel Bdard and Mr. Bruce Weaver.
Jun 29	2009 SHADS Challenged To Innovate with Natural Fibres (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is once again hosting some of the brightest young minds in Canada during Shad Valley 2009. The official welcome of the Shad Valley students took place on Monday, June 29, at 9:30 a.m. in Lakehead's Senate Chambers. The group of 65 Shads is the largest among all participating institutions.
Jun 23	4th International Lake Tourism Conference at Lakehead (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University and the Centre for Tourism and Community Development Research have joined forces to bring researchers from all over the world to Northwestern Ontario to discuss lake tourism. From June 21 - 25, delegates from Canada, the U.S., Russia, New Zealand, South America, Africa, and Europe will congregate at the Lakehead campus to discuss wide-ranging topics including sustainable development, rural and community development tourism, tourism marketing, and building local capacity for indigenous tourism.
