(Thunder Bay) Dr. Rui Wang, Lakehead University Vice-President (Research), recently received a new Operating Grant from the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA), valued at $79,225 for his project entitled 'Hydrogen sulfide and pancreatic insulin metabolism.' This research grant resulted from a national competition and was ranked as an excellent application. It is also the first research grant received by Lakehead University for diabetes research from CDA. |

(Thunder Bay) A researcher from Lakehead University was recently awarded $10,000 from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Dr. Guangdong Yang, a Research Assistant Professor at the School of Kinesiology, will receive the 2009/2010 Dr. Maureen Andrew New Investigator Scholarship Award commencing July 1, 2009, for a research project entitled 'Regulation of cystathionine gamma-lyase expression in vascular smooth muscle cells.' |

(Thunder Bay) Representatives from Lakehead University and Confederation College announced today that the Collaborative Nursing Program curriculum has received national accreditation from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN). Since 1987 CASN accreditation promotes excellence in nursing education programs, and is the national accrediting body for nursing education in Canada. The purpose of accreditation is to encourage excellence in nursing education according to fundamental qualities and standards established by academic nursing to best meet the need of the Canadian population for nursing health care. |

(Orillia) e Government of Canada is investing $30 million over 5 years to help restore the health of Lake Simcoe through an initiative called the Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund administered by Environment Canada. Environment Canada, which calls for proposals for this funding twice per year, this week announced that Lakehead University Orillia professors, Dr. Nandakumar Kanavillil, Dr. Sreekumari Kurissery and Dr. Mary Thornbush along with Dr. Peter Lee of Lakehead Thunder Bay have been awarded $165,000 for a research proposal they submitted. |

Their winning degree project, entitled 'Utilization of coal/biomass fly ash and bentonite as a remediation barrier for acid mine drainage,' was completed under the supervision of Dr. Eltayeb Mohamedelhassan. |

(Thunder Bay) Sacha Dubois, a Lakehead University Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate, was awarded the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Aging Age+ Award for his paper titled 'The Impact of Benzodiazepines on Safe Driving.'This paper was part of Dubois' MPH thesis and was co-authored by Dr. Michel Bdard and Mr. Bruce Weaver. |

The official welcome of the Shad Valley students took place on Monday, June 29, at 9:30 a.m. in Lakehead's Senate Chambers. The group of 65 Shads is the largest among all participating institutions. |

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University and the Centre for Tourism and Community Development Research have joined forces to bring researchers from all over the world to Northwestern Ontario to discuss lake tourism. From June 21 - 25, delegates from Canada, the U.S., Russia, New Zealand, South America, Africa, and Europe will congregate at the Lakehead campus to discuss wide-ranging topics including sustainable development, rural and community development tourism, tourism marketing, and building local capacity for indigenous tourism. |
