Oct 22	Lakehead University Researchers Receive CIHR Grants Supporting Health Research (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University researchers have been awarded Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Operating Grants and other funding allowing them to continue pursuing their ground-breaking work - ranging from the management of dementia, treatment of atherosclerosis, and development of a new approach in cancer screening for First Nations women. An Operating Grant worth a total of $583,625 has been awarded to Dr. Rui Wang (Biology) to enable him to determine the connection between decreased production of hydrogen sulfide gas in blood vessels and the occurrence of atherosclerosis, a disease characterized by blood vessel inflammation, lipid and cholesterol deposition, and narrowing and stiffing of blood vessels. Dr. Elaine Wiersma (Health Sciences) will use $196,336 in funding to examine how the development of a self-management program can help people who have dementia.

October 15-19 is 2012 Teaching and Learning Week, an annual week-long workshop that celebrates and promotes excellence in teaching and learning. "Providing a high quality teaching and learning experience has long been a core strength of Lakehead," says Dr. Rhonda Koster, Director of Lakehead's Instructional Development Centre.

Oct 12	Lakehead University Calendar Highlights Beautiful Art By Youth (Thunder Bay) Two new Lakehead University calendars feature amazing artwork by students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 at Thunder Bay and Simcoe County schools. Developed by the Faculty of Education, the calendars display colourful art depicting the seasons, nature, outdoor sports, animals, Aboriginal artwork, and other subjects. Over 300 pieces of student artwork were submitted to Lakehead University for consideration in the calendar, and a contest was held to choose the winning selections. The calendars will be distributed free of charge to schools Lakehead University has partnered with and to potential students.

Oct 5	Lakehead University Hosts Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (Thunder Bay) The Lakehead University community will definitely recognize the music performed by the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, Oct. 11 in the Agora. Theme songs from E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark will be performed, as well as music by Beethoven and other composers that will definitely entertain. "This is a great opportunity to connect with the Lakehead University community," says Chris Wilkinson, TBSO General Manager. "We certainly enjoy performing in various venues throughout Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario."
Oct 5	Lakehead Professor Hosts Prince Albert II of Monaco in Eastern Canadian Arctic (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University sociology professor Dr. Chris Southcott recently hosted Prince Albert II of Monaco during the Prince's visit to the Northern communities of Iqaluit in Nunavut and Kuujjuaq in Northern Quebec as part of University of the Arctic (www.uarctic.org). University of the Arctic is a network of universities, colleges, research institutes and other organizations located across the Circumpolar North - which Lakehead is a founding member.
Oct 4	Lakehead University Professor Recognized by Fraser Institute (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University Economics Professor Dr. Livio Di Matteo is joining the ranks of the senior fellows at the Fraser Institute for his research in health care spending and public finance. "It's nice to be recognized. Becoming a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute has the potential to be quite interesting," Professor Di Matteo says. This means Professor Di Matteo can participate in research projects with assistance from the Fraser Institute, one of Canada's leading policy institutes.
Oct 2	Lakehead University Awarded SSHRC Grants to Build New Knowledge and Develop Talent (Thunder Bay) Innovative research initiatives have earned Lakehead faculty and students more than $1.5 million over five years in Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) funding. Lakehead researchers from various fields such as anthropology, natural resources management, history and psychology are spearheading projects that touch on key aspects of the human experience.

Sep 25	Lakehead University and University of Minnesota Collaboration Strengthens Both Institutions (Thunder Bay) This will be the second time Lakehead University researchers travel to Duluth to meet their counterparts from the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) and UMD's Swenson College of Science and Engineering and Natural Resources Research Institute since the collaboration started in 2009. "Canadian Universities often overlook international opportunities over the border in the United States," says Lakehead President Dr. Brian Stevenson.
Sep 17	Major NSERC Training Grant Awarded to Lakehead University (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University has received a $1,647,075 grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) to train highly qualified personnel in medical imaging. The funding has been awarded through NSERC's Collaborative Research and Training Experience Program (CREATE). The purpose of the program is to support the training of highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad through the development of innovative training programs.

That was Dr. Thamara Laredo's goal when she organized the sustainability-focused summer lecture series that wrapped up at Lakehead University last month. Laredo is a professor of chemistry at the Orillia campus.
