May 15	Energy Conservation Week Highlights University Sustainable Practices (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is gearing up to participate in Ontario's Energy Conservation Week, which takes place May 19 - 22, 2009. A variety of events are designed to raise awareness and encourage University Community members to continue or adopt sustainable practices. Individuals may drop off used batteries for free and responsible recycling on campus, win a compact fluorescent light bulb, and purchase food from a local supplier at the Main Cafeteria, as well as participate in a variety of other events.
May 14	Women's Studies Transforms Worldviews (Thunder Bay) Building upon the success of the three-year BA program, the Department of Women's Studies at Lakehead University is pleased to announce its expansion. The Department now offers a four- year Honours BA in Women's Studies, as well as a joint Honours Programs with the Departments of Education, English, History, Gerontology, Indigenous Learning, Outdoor Recreation, Psychology, and Sociology.
May 12	Lakehead and University of Minnesota Duluth Collaboration Injects Excitement in Region (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University and the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), along with UMD's Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) and Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI), have created a new partnership designed to enhance research at both institutions, and to strengthen community linkage between Thunder Bay and Duluth.
May 12	Spring/Summer Issue of Alumni Magazine Focuses on Health Sciences (Thunder Bay) The Lakehead University Alumni Magazine is celebrating an important historical milestone by featuring the upcoming graduation of the Charter Class of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) on its cover. Lakehead University is granting 24 MD degrees out of a total of 56.
May 12	Study Focuses on Driving Safety for Elderly: 1000 Older Drivers Needed in 8 Cities (Thunder Bay) Candrive -- the Canadian Driving Research Initiative for Vehicular Safety in the Elderly -- is looking to recruit volunteers for a long-term study of older drivers to determine the key factors that impact their driving safety. Study results will help in the development of a simple, objective screening tool that will assist health-care professionals to identify the characteristics of safe and unsafe older drivers, and refer those deemed at risk for further assessment. This will help to alleviate many of the problems and inconsistencies doctors and families face in attempting to determine fitness to drive.

May 7	Unique Educational Summer Experience for Children at Lakehead University’s Eco-Literacy Camp (Thunder Bay) An exciting summer camp offered to children at Lakehead University is running this July. The Faculty of Education's Department of Lifelong Learning will be hosting the Eco-Literacy Adventure Camp, an educational program that uses ecologically based reading material and includes high-energy games, outdoor activities, art projects, and other creative approaches to reading comprehension.
May 6	Lakehead's Your Bright Future Campaign Receives $200,000 (Thunder Bay) Your Bright Future campaign to raise funds for the permanent campus of Lakehead University - Orillia has received a $200,000 donation from The Sarjeant Co. Ltd.
May 5	Forestry Insiders Turn to Students for New Ideas (Thunder Bay) Student research will be the focus of the Eastern Section of the Canadian Forest Products Society's Annual General Meeting and Conference, taking place Wednesday, May 6, 2009. The conference is hosted at Lakehead University, with several sites across eastern Canada where those interested may attend by videoconference.

May 1	Environmental Education Congress Takes Place May 10 – 14: Lakehead University Prof Co-Chairs Conference (Thunder Bay) From Sunday, May 10 to Thursday, May 14, the 5th World Environmental Education Congress takes place at Montral's Palais des Congrs (http://www.5weec.uqam.ca/). Sponsored in part by Lakehead University, the Congress is for educators, researchers, university students, community leaders, journalists, artists, and all other participants in environmental education to work together to strengthen education. In 2007, the Congress was held in Durban, South Africa, with more than 1000 participants. This year, close to 2000 registrants are expected.

Gabe Sweet, Corey Wendland, Seamus Magnus, and Lindsay Moore will be heading to Nevada, Wyoming, Sudbury, and Calgary, respectively.
Apr 28	Research Advances Knowledge of Individuals, Groups, & Societies (Thunder Bay) Research in the social sciences and humanities advances knowledge about individuals, groups, and societies--it helps to tell us how we live, what we think, and how we interact with each other and the world around us. With the help of support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), Lakehead University researchers will be doing just that.
Apr 22	Popular Ancient DNA Training Program Runs May 11-29: Still Time to Register (Thunder Bay) The Paleo-DNA Laboratory's 2009 Ancient DNA Training Program runs from May 11 to May 29, 2009. Lakehead's Paleo-DNA Laboratory is the only facility in the world that offers a training program in extraction, amplification, sequencing, and analysis of ancient nucleic acids (aDNA). Students will learn to isolate and analyze DNA, and can then apply this knowledge to further their studies in the field of DNA analysis. The program is an intensive 18 days of lectures and laboratory work, culminating in student presentations. Since 1999, 156 students from many scientific disciplines from around the world have completed this program. There are no pre-requisites required.

Apr 20	Lakehead University Social Science and Humanities Researchers Receive Significant Research Grants (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University Social Sciences & Humanities researchers are ecstatic! The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) recently granted Lakehead's most substantial grants to date, totalling $2,456,394. This figure is almost triple funding announced in previous years.
Apr 17	Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Opera - Fun Course Offered at Orillia Campus This Spring (Thunder Bay) This spring, Lakehead University - Orillia Campus is offering a unique learning experience. Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans, Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at Lakehead University will be on site at the Orillia Campus to teach Opera: From Production to Performance. Those interested are encouraged to register for the course, which begins May 4, and runs until May 25.
Apr 15	The aig+c Promotes Appreciation of NorthWestern Ontario's Uniqueness (Thunder Bay) The Advanced Institute for Globalization + Culture (aig+c) proudly presents independent writer, curator, and art historian, Dr. Elizabeth McLuhan, on, "The Shaman's Garden: Anishnaabe Traditions and the Roots of Morrisseau's Global Vision." Everyone is invited to this, the second public lecture of the aig+c in 2009-10, which takes place April 17.
Apr 14	Speaker Presents on Ethics, Disease: April 15 & 16 (Thunder Bay) What is the role of human values in health care? Is health care ethics based on genuine human values? These are some of the questions that Dr. Tom Koch, Adjunct Professor of Medical Geography at the University of British Columbia, will address at his upcoming talks hosted by Lakehead University. Koch will present Is Health Care Ethics Really Based on Genuine Human Values? on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital, Conference Room 3, as part of Lakehead's Centre for Health Care Ethics' Encounters in Bioethics session.
Apr 9	Lakehead University - Orillia Campus Offers Workshops in Conjunction with Folk Festival, July 2 & 3 (Thunder Bay) The Mariposa Folk Foundation and Lakehead University - Orillia Campus have partnered to offer two days of creative arts workshops on July 2 and 3, 2009, just prior to the Mariposa Folk Festival.
