(Thunder Bay) The Lakehead University Native Student Association is hosting its annual powwow at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse from Friday, March 14 until Sunday, March 16. The theme for this year’s powwow is re-uniting the community, which was decided after recent events in Thunder Bay resulted in social upheaval and a further division between local communities.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Research and Innovation Awards Reception was held on Thursday, March 6 to celebrate the dedication and hard work of researchers and students. “Because of this passion, Lakehead University was recently ranked number one in Ontario and number two in Canada for research by Re$earch Infosource,” said Dr. Rod Hanley, Acting Vice-President (Research, Economic Development and Innovation) and Provost and Vice-President (Academic).

(Orillia) Holly Wiggins’ great-grandfather, a butcher from a small town in England, joined the armed forces during the Second World War, leaving behind his young wife and two children under the age of five. His family would not hear from him again, until he was on a ship sailing back to Liverpool following his liberation from a Japanese prisoner of war camp.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Research & Innovation Week launched on Friday by highlighting some of the booths that will be on display in the Intercity Shopping Centre all day on Saturday, March 1. “Approximately 20 different booths will be run by Lakehead University researchers and students on Saturday at the Intercity Mall. Research and Innovation Week offers a glimpse into the important questions they answer to make the world a better place,” said Dr. Umed Panu, Associate Vice-President (Research, Economic Development and Innovation).

Hosted by public broadcaster Piya Chattopadhyay, the discussion will take place at Thunder Bay’s Fort William Historical Park on Tuesday, March 4 from 6:30 to 9 pm.

(Thunder Bay) As part of Lakehead University’s Research and Innovation Week, award-winning author Joseph Boyden will discuss what he learned about race relations before Canada’s Confederation; knowledge he gained while researching his 2013 bestselling novel The Orenda. Boyden will give a free talk at 7 pm on Wednesday, March 5 at Lakehead University in UC 1017. His talk is called The Past and the Future are Present: Race Relations in Canada.

(Thunder Bay) Earl Miller of MaRS Discovery District will talk about the Power of Partnerships, during Lakehead University’s Research and Innovation Week held from March 1-7. Miller is the Director of Strategic Partnerships for MaRS, and is responsible for government relations and strategic partnerships with industry groups, professional associations, and non-profit organizations. He has a strong stake in commercialization and entrepreneurship. Miller’s talk is free of charge and includes a complimentary hot breakfast. It is being held in Lakehead University’s Faculty Lounge on Wednesday, March 5 from 7:30 – 9:30 am. Seating is limited and is on a first come first served basis. Registrants are encouraged to RSVP kafettes@lakeheadu.ca at their earliest opportunity to guarantee a seat.

(Thunder Bay) , (Orillia) Dr. Hendrik Poinar will give an engaging talk examining causes of the plague, during Lakehead University’s Research and Innovation Week to be held from March 1-7. This free presentation is part of the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies Speaker Series. Dr. Poinar, a Canada Research Chair in Paleogenetics at McMaster University, will discuss the implications of his research into the plague in the context of understanding the evolution of virulence and the co-evolution of its ‘accidental’ hosts: humans.

This new council is comprised of regional industry and business leaders.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead's Department of Mathematical Sciences is privileged to be a regional host for the Canadian Math Kangaroo Contest for the second year in a row. The contest will be held in Thunder Bay on Sunday, March 23 in the University’s Ryan Building, between 12 and 3 pm. “The Kangaroo Contest provides students with challenging questions beyond the regular curriculum that will spark their interest in mathematics. Participating in math contests boosts their confidence and gives them the opportunity to interact with like-minded peers,” said Dr. Monica Ilie, Mathematical Sciences Associate Professor.

The Co-Curricular Record (CCR) was launched as a new and exciting initiative for all students at Lakehead’s Orillia and Thunder Bay campuses. The CCR is an official document that chronicles a student’s involvement in not-for-credit activities at Lakehead University.

Talks will be hosted by experts from Lakehead University who will discuss topics ranging from the beauty of bugs, classical guitar, and the fashion and femininity of flappers from the 1920s.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead's Provost and Vice-President (Academic), Dr. Rod Hanley, today announced the renewal of two of our University's deans: Dr. Lori Livingston, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, and Dr. Gillian Siddall, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. "These decanal renewals are in recognition and response to the dedication and contribution these individuals have made to their respective faculties and Lakehead as a whole," said Dr. Hanley. "In a time of increased importance in post-secondary education, universities need to retain those in key positions whose strategies and philosophies only serve to benefit our students and the future of academia.”

(Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is one of 21 Ontario universities launching a Virtual Scavenger Hunt that will take the public on an intriguing online journey through the world of research, the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) announced this week. The month-long contest, which begins Monday, Feb. 3, is open to students and the general public. Contestants can solve new clues every day to enter for prizes. Intrepid scavengers who get all 21 clues correct will be able to unlock a secret message that they can then submit to be entered for grand prizes. “Ontario's universities constantly produce useful and fascinating research that we generally only hear about when a major breakthrough is made,” says Erica Sawula, Lakehead University’s Research Matters Student Ambassador.
