(Orillia) A group of 18 Lakehead University students gathered with family and friends last night for a special convocation dinner and ceremony at Orillia restaurant, Era 67.

(Orillia) Conor Jones of Orillia is in his third year of the Honours Bachelor Commerce program at Lakehead University. In May 2013 May, he began exploring the idea of studying abroad for the 2013 fall semester. Conor worked with the Lakehead Orillia Student Affairs Department to organize a trip to Sweden. After receiving a Student Exchange Bursary through Lakehead University International, he was able to pack his bags and set out on his journey.

(Thunder Bay) , (Orillia) Lakehead University’s Vice-Provost (Aboriginal Initiatives), Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux, and President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson, have signed three memoranda of understanding (MOU) with three Indigenous Intercultural Universities in Mexico.

(Thunder Bay) A Lakehead University Masters of Business Administration student, Naureen Mushfique, recently placed second in the Focus 2040 Competition. This competition challenges students to evaluate what the workplace will be like in the year 2040. Students are asked to think beyond textbook principles, evaluate real world workplaces, and plan an innovative work system.

(Thunder Bay) Two of the five Research Matters’ Virtual Scavenger Hunt grand prizes have been awarded to Lakehead University students who participated in February’s province-wide research challenge. The Council of Ontario Universities organizes Research Matters events to encourage the public to explore how Ontario university research affects everyday life. The Virtual Scavenger Hunt took students and the public on a journey into research happening at universities across Ontario.

(Thunder Bay) , (Orillia) Lakehead University’s Board of Governors have passed a motion that current Board Vice-Chair, Murray Walberg, will assume the role of Chair of the University’s Board of Governors in October 2014. “Lakehead University is critically important to the prosperity of our community and region,” said Mr. Walberg. “I am proud to be given the opportunity to further support Lakehead’s continued progress and growth as the next Chair of its Board of Governors.”

(Orillia) Lakehead University Orillia celebrated the achievements of its athletes and sports teams on Saturday evening at its Annual Athletic Awards Banquet, held at the Best Western Mariposa Inn in Orillia. The event paid tribute to the accomplishments of student athletes over the 2013-14 academic year.

(Thunder Bay) A dozen Lakehead University undergraduate students and their instructor are taking a trip to Europe to learn more about the history, monuments and battlefields of the First and Second World Wars. This April and May, students from the Department of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism’s Battlefield Tourism course will spend 10 days visiting monuments and battlefields in Normandy, Northern France, Belgium and Holland.

(Thunder Bay) More than 200 Lakehead University students recently learned about the human face of caring through an interactive mask-making project that will help shape the nurses that they will become. The goal is to teach Bachelor of Science in Nursing students about caring by helping them understand themselves, others and the world they live in.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead’s accounting students placed first at this year’s Gathering of Accounting Associates, Professionals, and Students (GAAPS) competition out of 12 undergraduate teams from across Canada. The winning Lakehead team was comprised of fourth-year accounting students Ben Anderson, Lucas Bauer, Nick Dzikowski, and Taylor Hosanna. This isn’t the first time Lakehead’s accounting students have done well in the competition – they finished second in 2013, first in 2011 and third in 2010.

(Thunder Bay) A new textbook written by a Lakehead University professor empowers elementary school teachers with more effective ways to support their students in learning and using mathematics. Mathematical Models for Teaching (Canadian Scholars’ Press) is based on new theories about the teaching and learning of elementary mathematics. The ground-breaking textbook argues for a new pedagogy that goes above and beyond routine memorization.

(Orillia) Public speaking, for many, is a terrifying prospect. “When I had to make a presentation, I would get so nervous … I wanted to cry,” concedes Judy Zhong, a first-year Environmental Sustainability student at Orillia’s Lakehead University campus. “It’s so intimidating to stand in front of a class and give a speech.”

(Thunder Bay) The Lakehead University Native Student Association is hosting its annual powwow at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse from Friday, March 14 until Sunday, March 16. The theme for this year’s powwow is re-uniting the community, which was decided after recent events in Thunder Bay resulted in social upheaval and a further division between local communities.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Research and Innovation Awards Reception was held on Thursday, March 6 to celebrate the dedication and hard work of researchers and students. “Because of this passion, Lakehead University was recently ranked number one in Ontario and number two in Canada for research by Re$earch Infosource,” said Dr. Rod Hanley, Acting Vice-President (Research, Economic Development and Innovation) and Provost and Vice-President (Academic).
