Feb 18	Public Invited to Discover New Creations and Innovations at Lakehead (Thunder Bay) Research and Innovation Week 2009 is a celebration of innovation and discovery, and an invitation to the public to participate and discover new and interesting things uncovered by researchers at Lakehead University. This fourth annual event takes place February 20 - 27, 2009. Throughout the week, community members have the opportunity to participate in interactive displays and exhibits, attend public lectures and discussion, learn more about graduate student research, and more.
Feb 11	Local Tire Business Wheels Lakehead's Formula-1 SAE Team to International Competition (Thunder Bay) Members of Lakehead University's Formula-1 Society of Automotive Engineers (LUFSAE) team have spent almost three years working on their prototype race car. Their dream of racing against over 100 other schools in Michigan this May just got one step closer. Fountain Tire has donated two sets of tires specifically designed for FSAE applications to the team: one set of Goodyear Dry FSAE racing tires, and one set of Goodyear Full-Wet racing tires. With a new compound and a computer-optimized mold shape for maximum footprint efficiency, this model of tire was run in 2006 by several universities with outstanding results
Feb 11	Serendipitous Events Lead to February Concerts (Thunder Bay) Ser - en - dip- i- ty: an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident. Judging by the events that transpired to bring about New Music North's upcoming concert exchange pilot project, composer Aris Carastathis seems to have just such an aptitude. The concert, which features music by Canadian composers, Darlene Chepil Reid, Robert Lemay, and Mark Nerenberg, as well as Carastathis, among others, will take place in Thunder Bay on February 12. It will also be performed in Toronto, as part of a new-music exchange pilot project.
Feb 9	Lakehead University Forestry Students Create Winning Designs in Wood Works Competition (Thunder Bay) Objective: create an innovative wood product with market potential. No problem for Lakehead University Faculty of Forestry & the Forest Environment students. Jim Riffel, Scott Rubin, and Serge Laforest have been recognized for their elegant, innovative, and marketable wood product designs, with cash winnings amounting to $6000, in the second annual Wood Works competition.
Feb 6	New Book on Northwestern Ontario’s Working Class (Thunder Bay) The Centre for Northern Studies is pleased to announce the release of its newest publication, Essays in Northwestern Ontario Working Class History: Thunder Bay and Its Environs, edited by Lakehead University alumnus, member of the Department of History, and Co-Director of the Lakehead Social History Institute, Dr. Michel S. Beaulieu.
Feb 4	Dolores Wawia to be Featured on TVO's Your Voice (Thunder Bay) TVO will be bringing Your Voice, an online discussion series for parents, to the Thunder Bay's Fort William First Nation Community Centre to examine issues in Aboriginal education, with an expert guest panel on February 6 and 7. Two specials focusing on Aboriginal Education will be taped. Lakehead University professor Dolores Wawia of the Department of Aboriginal Education will be a featured guest on Your Voice
Feb 2	New Technology and Collaboration Connects Thunder Bay and Antigonish Students (Thunder Bay) This term, eight students from Lakehead University and St. Francis Xavier University will be participating in a new Community Service Learning (CSL) opportunity. In two separate Political Science courses - in two separate provinces - students will meet over the Internet and compare experiences and research outcomes.
Jan 30	History Professor Receives Lakehead’s Most Prestigious Teaching Award (Thunder Bay) Associate Professor of History Dr. Bruce Strang is the 2008 winner of Lakehead University's most prestigious teaching award.
Jan 29	Acclaimed Public Intellectual Mark Kingwell to Speak at Lakehead University January 30 (Thunder Bay) Mark Kingwell, one of Canada's best-known public intellectuals, will present the inaugural lecture of Lakehead University's Advanced Institute for Globalization and Culture (the aig+c or 'agency'). Kingwell's work has appeared in such venues as the Globe & Mail, The Walrus, and Harper's Magazine.
Jan 28	Indigenous Tourism: Cultural Revitalization or Cultural Erosion? Dr. Pamela Wright Gives Public Lecture (Thunder Bay) Northern British Columbia is rich in indigenous tourism experiences that showcase local First Nations' tradition and culture through celebrations, festivals, art, and everyday life. However, tourism has the potential to come at a cost and may ultimately contribute to a breakdown in the social structure of the community.
Jan 26	Lakehead Search for New President Begins (Thunder Bay) A message from Mr. Kevin Cleghorn, Chair of the Board of Governors, to Lakehead University faculty, staff, students, and alumni, and all stakeholders of the University. Dr. Fred Gilbert's term as President will expire on May 31, 2010. Therefore, a Presidential Search Committee has been formed.
Jan 21	Mumps is Back - Vaccinations on Campus January 29 (Thunder Bay) Eighty percent of students/young adults are not fully protected from the mumps. A risk of contracting the mumps virus has been identified for university and college students in Ontario. Mumps is a very contagious disease that can cause serious complications in young adults.
Jan 15	Mathematician Publishes Book on Concept of Near and Far: A Concept both Simple and Profound (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Dr. Som Naimpally received good news last August, on his 77th birthday. A book he had been working on for the past two years is being published this month in Germany.
Jan 14	The Centre for Health Care Ethics Bestows First Bioethics Leadership Award (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Centre for Health Care Ethics will be bestowing its first "Bioethics Leadership Award" today, to Dr. Peter Singer. Dr. Singer has a long-standing relationship with Lakehead University, having helped to establish its Centre for Health Care Ethics (CHCE) more than 10 years ago.
Jan 9	Celebration of Winter: Lakehead University Offers Day of Fun-Filled Activities (Thunder Bay) As students return to classes amid frigid weather conditions, the Orientation Office has arranged a one-day event of winter activities called WinterLUde, featuring the first ever appearance of a dog sledding team on campus, outdoor boot hockey, indoor 'mini-stick' hockey, curling, snow shoeing, and more.
Jan 2	Heather Saaltink Memorial Award Established (Thunder Bay) The Heather Saaltink Memorial Award has been established, and is now accepting donations. Cheques may be made payable to Lakehead University, and sent to the Office of University Advancement.
Dec 22	CDs Showcase Music by Lakehead University Professor (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University Music Professor Dr. Aris Carastathis has had his music performed in Austria, Canada, England, Germany, Greece, Kazakhstan, Poland, Serbia and the United States--and now his works have made their way onto two recently released CDs.
Dec 15	Lakehead University Geology Receives $10,000 from ACTlabs (Thunder Bay) The Lakehead University Geology Department has received a $10,000 donation from the Activation Laboratories Group of Companies (ACTlabs), a group which performs analytical services for clientele located worldwide. Coming on the heels of a $10,000 donation from CDN Resource Laboratories, the ACTlabs funds will also be used for the purchase of microscopes.
Dec 12	Lakehead Expert Panelist on iChannel’s Discussion Program (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Dr. Ulf Runesson, professor in the Faculty of the Forest and Forest Environment, recently appeared as a panelist on iChannel's discussion program @Issue. The topic was Canada's boreal forest and its management.
Dec 12	CFI Awards $189,830 to Lakehead University To Support Fire Resistance Testing Laboratory (Thunder Bay) The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) announced today that it has awarded $189,830 to Lakehead University to support the Fire Resistance Testing Laboratory led by Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Timo Tikka.
