Sep 30	Thunder Bay Attracts a World Leading MRI Research Scientist with Ties to Harvard University (Thunder Bay) Today the medical research community in the Northwest welcomes two new recruits to the region: Dr. Mitchell Albert is the first-ever Lakehead University/Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute Research Chair; and Mr. Scott Gillis holds a dual role as Director of Business Development and Commercialization for TBRRI and MaRS Innovation. Dr. Albert is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Lakehead University and will be making both research and teaching contributions to the new PhD program in Chemistry and Materials Science.
Sep 13	Improving Quality of Care for Ontario Seniors: Early Researcher Awards Support Three Lakehead Students (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health (CERAH), as a partner in the Ontario Research Coalition of Research Institutes/Centres on Health & Aging (ORC), has received funding for Early Researcher Awards that provide support to students to offset the cost of conducting research. This year, CERAH is pleased to announce that three Lakehead University students, Ashley Hope, Kathy Kortes-Miller, and Kimberly Ramsbottom, have been selected by the Centre to receive individual Early Researcher Awards valued from $7,000 - $10,000.
Sep 12	Lakehead University Researcher Recognized Nationally for Improving the Quality of Palliative Care: Dr. Mary Lou Kelley receives Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association 2011 Award of Excellence (Thunder Bay) The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) announced at its annual conference last Friday evening in St. John's Newfoundland, that Dr. Mary Lou Kelley is the recipient of the 2011 Award of Excellence in Hospice Palliative Care. Dr. Kelley is a pioneering and dedicated professor of social work at Lakehead University and an internationally recognized palliative care researcher.

Jun 10	MEAGlow Semiconductor Research Laboratory Opens at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay) A state-of-the-art semiconductor research laboratory officially opened today, June 10. A joint project between Lakehead University and MEAGlow Ltd. - an Ontario-based company established to help commercialize MEAGlow technology - the lab houses a Canadian-designed MEAGlow chemical film growth reactor, built in Thunder Bay, that grows very thin crystal layers of nitride semiconductors on micro, nano, and sub-atomic scales, including two dimensional (2-D) structures.
Jun 7	CRIBE Invests $3 Million in Partnership Between G2 Biochem Ethanol and Lakehead University (Thunder Bay) CRIBE is providing $3 million for an innovative partnership between Lakehead University's Biorefining Research Initiative (LU) and G2 BioChem in Chatham. G2 BioChem's facility is the only provincial facility that allows the complete breakdown of wood fibre outside of a laboratory environment. This unique opportunity will allow Thunder Bay to be at the forefront of new uses for forest biomass.

May 25	Lakehead University 2011 US National Student Steel Bridge Champion (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Civil Engineering Steel Bridge Team fared well in all seven scoring categories at the 20th annual AISC/ASCE US National Student Steel Bridge Competition to win first place, beating 47 other universities. Lakehead is the only Canadian team to place in the top five overall since the inception of the competition and the first Canadian team to win the competition. Hosted by Texas A & M University, May 20 - 21, 2011, the annual competition attracts participants from across North America.
May 18	Lakehead University Creates Task Force for Faculty of Law (Thunder Bay) Brian Stevenson, president of Lakehead University, announced the creation of the Chancellor's Task Force for the proposed Lakehead University Faculty of Law. The Task Force was created following an historic vote by Lakehead University Senate on May 13, at which both the proposed curriculum and the establishment of a Faculty of Law were approved.
