Research Interests:

Professor Sudip Kumar Rakshit is a biochemical engineer with over three decades of
international experience in biorefining, bioenergy, and biochemical engineering, with
academic and leadership roles across India, Thailand, and Canada. He is currently a
UArctic Research Chair in Integrated Sustainability Analysis and Circular Bioeconomy
at Lakehead University and previously held the position of Canada Research Chair (Tier
1) in Bioenergy and Biorefining Processes (2012–2026).

His research focuses on the development of sustainable bioprocesses for converting
biomass and waste resources into fuels, chemicals, and value-added products. A key
emphasis of his current work is on integrated sustainability analysis, including techno-
economic analysis (TEA) and environmental and social life cycle assessment (LCA), to
evaluate the viability and broader impacts of emerging bio-based systems.

Professor Rakshit’s recent research increasingly addresses challenges relevant to
Arctic and northern regions, including seasonal variability, resource constraints, and
decentralized processing systems. He is particularly interested in applying sustainability
frameworks to support circular bioeconomy approaches in northern and Indigenous
contexts, including potential collaborative work with First Nations communities on
capacity building, local economic development, biomass utilization, waste management,
and environmentally responsible development pathways.

Over his career, he has established research laboratories and platforms in multiple
countries, supervised approximately 30 PhD and 125 Master’s students, and led or
contributed to numerous international research projects funded by agencies in Canada,
the United States, Europe, and Asia.
