My overall research goal is to understand convergent evolution in plants, using heterotrophic plants and carnivorous plants as model systems. These plants are interesting because they have unusual nutritional modes that have evolved repeatedly; studying independent cases of these gives general insights into convergent pathways of evolution. My past and current research mainly focuses on phylogenomics and genomic evolution of heterotrophic plants and carnivorous plants, and the physiological ecology of plant carnivory. My research combines multiple approaches, including genomics, bioinformatics, stable isotope ecology, in situ ecological experiment, and collection-based investigation.
