I am interested in a range of topics in Psychology including effects of digital technology such as social media and generative AI, subjective well-being, emotion regulation, and prosocial behaviour. However, a primary focus of my research is on empathy. I am particularly interested in how empathy is experienced in everyday life, how it unfolds dynamically in interpersonal interactions, and how it can be regulated to improve outcomes for both the empathizer and the person receiving empathy. For example, in one line of work, I have developed wise empathy interventions which train individuals to better engage with emotions on their social media feed, thereby improving their well-being while browsing. In another line of work, I have examined how different dimensions of empathy are associated with outcomes for the individual receiving empathy including perceived partner responsiveness and perceived responses to capitalization attempts. I am also interested in methodological and analytic techniques including experience sampling, dyadic studies, multi-level modeling, network analysis, and response surface analysis.
