The Department of Gender and Women's Studies in collaboration with Lakehead University's Gender Equity Centre presents the annual Feminisms at the Lakehead!
Keynote Speakers
Visiting Speaker: Suman Mondal
Queer activist at McMaster University whose work revolves around the social, political, and legal implications of LGBTQIA+ Indians in progressive regions of India. Recipient of the Lambda Scholarship Foundation Award & the prestigious Hooker Fellowship.
Regional/Local Speaker: Dr. Eleanor Gittens
Professor, human rights activist, & Co-editor of the Canadian Framework for Collaborative Police Response on Sexual Violence
National Speaker: Dr. El Jones
Poet, journalist, author, and abolitionist activist; Author of Live from the Afrikan Resistance!, and Abolitionist Intimacies; Co-host of the radio show Black Power Hour.

GWS Hosted Feminisms at the Lakehead
The Department of Gender & Women's Studies teamed up with LUSU's Gender Equity and Pride Centre to host the annual one-day conference, Feminisms at the Lakehead on April 10, 2024. Visiting Keynote artist Ojo Agi shared her experiences centring black feminist art as both an artist, and curator at the AGO. Students and community activists also presented their work for a day of wide-ranging topics, music, and celebration.

Note: There are non-discipline-specific scholarships and bursaries available.
Helen Smith memorial Award (min. $500)
Gender and Women's Studies Major with the highest mark in 1100 the previous year.
Millie Barrett Memorial Award ($550)
Undergraduate pursuing studies in the political, historical or social-cultural disciplines.
Peggy Tripp Memorial Women's Studies Student Award ($500)
Upper-year student with exemplary community involvement in areas of women's issues, social justice and/or environmental issues.
Himmelman Family Bursary ($200)
Major in Gender and Women's Studies or taking or have taken Gender and Women’s Studies courses,
on the basis of financial need.
Women's Studies Bursary ($100)
Gender and Women's Studies student on the basis of financial need and a minimum 'B' standing.
