Program Information

Centrally located and surrounded by numerous accessible lakes, rivers and other picturesque natural features, Lakehead University's School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks & Tourism is the only one of its kind in Canada. Offering a unique integration of theoretical and applied perspectives, the program is extremely popular, and demands a significant level of commitment in addition to high standards of academic excellence. Our program includes practical study in all aspects of outdoor recreation, research on nature-based recreation, parks and tourism; activities from local to international scales, including Aboriginal and multi-cultural perspectives; and direct experience and interaction with practitioners. You will learn about leadership and independent critical thinking, social and environmental responsibilities, and recreational activities and leisure pursuits related to and dependent upon the natural environment.

How the Transfer Program Works

You enter into Year 2 of the four-year Honours Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation program, and can complete your degree in as little as three years.

  • Complete Dawson College's two-year Community Recreation & Leadership Training Diploma, and
  • Achieve an overall average of at least 75%.

  1. Use the OUAC Undergraduate Application. You may need to create an account first, if you have never applied using the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) before. 
  2. Select the program Outdoor Recreation (Pathways with Select Ontario Colleges: Confederation, Dawson, Georgian, and Sault) (Thunder Bay Campus only). The OUAC program code is ABI.
  3. Select Outdoor Recreation Major (Thunder Bay) from the Subject of Major Interest drop-down menu.
  4. As you proceed through the application process, use the Online Transcript Request to have your transcript(s) sent to us, if applicable: 
    1. We require all of your post-secondary transcripts (i.e. from all colleges and universities attended).
    2. We do not require your high school transcript.

Applied Life Sciences focuses on the study of living organisms at the bio-molecular, or cellular, level. This interdisciplinary program blends theories and practices from Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry and Physics with hands-on learning through laboratory courses, research opportunities and internships.

Program Information

Government policies influence virtually every aspect of our lives, from housing to education to crime. Our Political Science program studies the institutions, ideas, practices, and power that shape government and policy at all levels. Students will gain a thorough understanding of political systems - with a particular focus on Canadian politics - and overarching notions of freedom, equality, and justice.

As a Political Science student, you will gain a thorough understanding of governments and political systems. You will learn about the various aspects of Canadian politics such as the federal system, voting behaviour, political parties and pressure groups. Our goal is to provide a well-rounded Political Science education by applying both theoretical and practical modes of analysis to examine sociological, economic, and historical contexts. Our diverse course content, combined with an intimate learning environment, provides a comprehensive education in classic and contemporary government, law, and politics, as well as highly developed writing, research and analytical skills.

Explore the major ideas and insights of the founders of sociology, as well as contemporary thinkers who examine present-day social life. Master the essentials of social research - how to design questionnaires and carry out meaningful surveys, collect and analyze quantitative, qualitative, and historical data, and conduct participant-observation and interviews. Apply these skills to study and better understand numerous topics and issues in social life that interest you. Lakehead's faculty are engaged in research in areas as diverse as health and illness, gerontology, gender and work, media and popular culture, the sociology of knowledge, sociological theory, sociology of the North, and global social change.

Program Information

Indigenous Learning is the study of Indigenous history, culture and values and strives to increase awareness/appreciation of the life experience of Indigenous Peoples with a view to creating an environment of understanding and trust amongst all Peoples. The Indigenous Learning Program attracts a wide cross section of students, many of whom come to Lakehead University specifically for the Indigenous Learning Program. Students interested in Indigenous Learning at Lakehead University will learn to survey construction, to analyse census data, archival research, and to examine government records.
