Lakehead University provides over $11 million annually to students in the form of scholarships, bursaries and awards.

Our Entrance Scholarships recognize the hard work and effort our future students put in to their studies, prior to enroling at Lakehead. That is why we offer one of the leading scholarship programs for future students in the country.

Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships & Awards

 Entrance Scholarships (Domestic Students)

Lakehead University offers one of the top entrance scholarship programs to direct from high school Canadian students in the country.

Who Is Eligible?

Academic Entrance Scholarships are automatically awarded, with no application required, to scholars entering Lakehead University directly from a recognized Canadian high school curriculum.

Are Entrance Scholarships Renewable?

Yes – students awarded a renewable Academic Entrance Scholarship must maintain a minimum 80% or 90% average in each academic year, according to the terms found in the Scholarship Offer. A normal full course load is required in each year of study.

* Renewable providing a 90% average is achieved in each academic year. If a student’s university academic average falls between 80.0% - 89.9%, the student will receive an amended scholarship valued at $2,500 / year for each subsequent academic year for the remaining term of the scholarship.

How and When Are Entrance Scholarship Offers Made?

Entrance Scholarship averages are calculated at three separate times throughout the year.  The highest offer is provided to you and your scholarship offer cannot decrease.  

March:  Top six (6) Grade 12 U or M midterm academic marks available at the time of the scholarships offer.  If six (6) marks are not available, then the top Grade 11 U or M marks will be used to count to six (6).

May:  Top six (6) Grade 12 U or M midterm and final academic marks will be used at the time of the scholarship offer.

July:  Top six (6) Grade 12 U or M final marks will be used at the time of the scholarship offer.

If you are from a different province, you must ensure your transcript is provided to the Office of Enrolment Services - Undergraduate Admissions as per the following:

  • For March calculations, transcripts are due by February
  • For May calculations, transcripts are due by April
  • For July calculations, transcripts are due by July

Can The Value Of My Entrance Scholarship Offer Change?

Yes, your scholarship offer can always improve! Your final Entrance Scholarship value will be the best value from any of the three rounds.

 Entrance Scholarships (International)

Lakehead University’s International Entrance Scholarships recognize the academic achievements of international students entering into undergraduate studies.  Students are automatically considered.  No scholarship application required!

Who Is Eligible?

International Entrance Scholarships are automatically awarded, with no application required, to non-Canadian citizens who are entering Lakehead University from a recognized high school curriculum or who are transferring from an international college or university. The scholarship is available to the top international high school students applying to Lakehead University for 2018-2019.

How and When are Entrance Scholarship Offers Made?

Entrance Scholarship averages are awarded based on the Canadian equivalent of your average used for admission consideration. Scholarship Offers will be on-going. A limited number of International Entrance Scholarships are available. International students considering Lakehead University are encouraged to apply to the University early in order to be considered for the two Entrance Scholarship rounds. 

Is my Scholarship Renewable?

Yes - Students awarded an International Entrance Scholarship valued at $5,000/year and greater may renew their entrance scholarship provided the minimum academic requirements are met.  Renewable International Entrance Scholarships will be paid at the rate received, either $7,500 or $5,000, and are available for a maximum of 4 years.  Students must maintain a minimum 80% average in each academic year, according to the terms found in the Scholarship Offer.  A normal full course load is required in each year of study.

No - Students awarded an International Entrance Scholarship of $4,000 are non-renewable, and are a one-time payment.

Can my entrance scholarship be applied to my academic English program costs?

No. Your Entrance Scholarship will be applied to your first year tuition to an undergraduate degree program once you have successfully completed Lakehead University's Academic English Program.

 Presidential Scholarship

Value:

Up to 2 x $30,000 ($7,500/year for 4 years)

Eligibility:

Awarded to up to two (2) outstanding Canadian high school students annually who have achieved a minimum 90% average and have demonstrated leadership qualities and made significant contributions to their high school and community. Candidates selected for an interview will have his/her expenses paid to travel to the Thunder Bay or Orillia campus. Click here for the application. 

Application Deadline: April 15, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. for the 2018-2019 academic year. 

Please submit four (4) printed packages, including all supporting documentation.

Northwestern Ontario & Simcoe County Citizenship Scholarship

Value:

$3,000 (for 1st year only)

Eligibility:

  • Awarded to ten (10) graduating students from high schools in Northwestern Ontario and Simcoe County who model good citizenship within their high school and community
  • A minimum 85% average in Grade 12 U or M academic marks as of May 2018 is required
  • Must be a citizen, permanent resident, or landed immigrant of Canada
  • Must plan to attend Lakehead University the following year on a full-time basis
  • Must be nominated by high school guidance department
 

Application Process:

  • One (1) eligible student from each high school is nominated by their guidance department
  • Each guidance department will inform Student Awards & Financial Aid of their nomination
  • Nominated students will receive further instructions from their guidance department
  • Nominated students must complete the “Supplemental Application Package” 
    • The supplemental application package can be downloaded here.
    • Supplemental application packages must be completed electronically in MS Word
    • Completed supplemental application packages must be emailed to studentcentral@lakeheadu.ca with the following subject line:  Citizenship Scholarship Application.
 

Supplemental Application Package Tips:

  • Read over the entire supplemental application package before you start completing each section. Follow the specific instructions for each section.
  • There is no limit on the number of pages submitted. Be as detailed or as concise as you would like! Just be sure to provide us with a good understanding of your involvement within your high school and community.
  • The deadline to submit the supplemental application package is March 31, 2018 at 4:30pm. Late submissions will not be considered.  

Additional Information:

  • This scholarship may be combined with the Lakehead University Academic Entrance Scholarship up to the maximum value of free tuition. This scholarship cannot be held with the Lakehead University Presidential Scholarship.
  • High schools from Northwestern Ontario & Simcoe County can nominate only one (1) student. If the student does not meet the above criteria at the time of review or chooses to not attend Lakehead University the following year on a full-time basis, the high school cannot nominate another student.
  • The ten (10) recipients of the Northwestern Ontario & Simcoe County Citizenship Scholarships will be notified in May 2018.  
 
Alumni Association Entrance Award

Is one of your parents an alumni of Lakehead University?  Then why not apply for the Lakehead University Alumni Association Entrance Award?  The award is a $2,500 renewable scholarship and is selected by the Lakehead University Alumni Association.

How do I qualify?

For all applicants, the Lakehead University Alumni Association reviews "Conditions of the Award" and awards the scholarship to a deserving applicant.  To view the conditions please visit the following link: Lakehead University Alumni Association.

How and when do I apply?

The Lakehead University Alumni Association handles all applications and sets the deadline annually for this award.  Please refer to the Application Form found here for current information: Lakehead University Alumni Association's website.

Entrance Athletic Scholarships for Varsity Athletes

Value: 

Up to $4,500

Eligibility:

Entrance student athletes with
 a minimum admission average of 80%,
 who meet CIS and OUA eligibility criteria,
 and who will be members of a 
2018-2019 Lakehead University

Specialist High Skills Major Award

The Province of Ontario created the specialist high skills major (SHSM) program to help meet the needs, interests, and strengths of all students, engaging them in learning and better preparing them for graduation and beyond.

That is why Lakehead University has created the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Award and made it available to students entering directly from high school and who have a SHSM designation on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).  Our SHSM Award is designed to help you continue exploring your interests and set your own path.

Value: $500

Eligibility:

  • Be a citizen, permanent resident, or landed immigrant of Canada
  • Be a Canadian Grade 12 high school student completing one of the following Specialist High Skills Majors: Arts & Culture; Business; Environment; Health & Wellness; Mining; or Sports
  • Demonstrate financial need

Deadline:  April 15, 2018 at 4:30 pm for the 2017-2018 academic year. 

Awarding of Bursaries:

Your application will be reviewed by the Office of Enrolment Services - Student Awards & Financial Aid and you will be notified of your eligible award amount. In order to receive the award, you must register and attend a full-time undergraduate program at Lakehead University starting September 2018. The award will be credited to your Lakehead University Statement of Account and applied towards your tuition fees for the 2018/2019 school year.

Transfer Award
 

If you are a transfer student that will be registered in full-time undergraduate studies at Lakehead University in a diploma or first degree program, you may be eligible for the Transfer Student Award.

Value: $500-$1,000

Eligibility: 

  • Must be able to demonstrate financial need
  • Must have taken prior studies in an academic program at an accredited Community College, Bible College, or University
  • Must Not have completed a first degree but, may have completed a diploma program, and
  • Be Canadian citizens or have Permanent Resident status.

Deadline: This application is currently closed.  The application for the 2018-2019 academic year will be open from March 1 to June 30, 2018.

Requirements:

To complete your application, a current transcript and grading scheme/legend (final grades) must be received by Enrolment Services- Student Awards and Financial Aid by June 30, 2018. Please ensure your Lakehead student number is included. Applications without an accompanying transcript will not be considered.  Please note that transcripts may be official or unofficial and must include your full name and institution on the submitted copy (handwritten, or typed names will not be considered complete).

Additional Information:

The award is offered on the basis of full-time academic performance in the most recent year of post-secondary studies. The value depends on the quality and number of eligible students in a given year. 

Students will be prompted to complete the Transfer Bursary Application as part of this application to determine financial need.

Directions:

Students must first login to myInfo with their user name and password. This information is provided on the Letter of Acknowledgement provided to every student after applying to Lakehead University. From here, students will be redirected to the application.

 

Undergraduate Entrance Bursaries

While our Entrance Scholarships recognize academic merit, our Entrance Bursaries provide a form of financial assistance based on financial need. Review the various Bursaries available and be sure to submit your application!

Campus Tour Bursary 

Whether you are visiting us for a Campus Tour or a Campus Open House, we offer up to $500 in financial assistance to prospective students who are currently in grade 12 and travelling from a distance to come experience what it is like to be a student at Canada's #1 Value Added University. The application must be submitted within three weeks of your campus visit and you must have visited campus by July 14, 2018.

There is no better way to find out if Lakehead University is the right place for you than to see it for yourself. Hundreds of students and their families visit Lakehead every year from across Ontario and the rest of Canada. We know how important it is for you to have the opportunity to explore the campus, check out residence, meet with your future professors and get a feel for our cities!

  • Be a citizen, permanent resident, or landed immigrant of Canada
  • Be a Canadian Grade 12 high school student
  • Must travel at least 150 km to come experience our campus in person
  • Demonstrate financial need

Awarding of Bursary:

Enrolment Services - Student Awards & Financial Aid will notify you of your eligible bursary amount. In order to receive the bursary, you must register and attend a full-time undergraduate program at Lakehead University starting September 2018. The bursary will be credited to your Lakehead University Statement of Account and applied towards your tuition fees for the 2017-2018 school year.

Entrance/Travel Bursary 

Lakehead University's exceptional entrance bursary program can provide students entering directly from high school funds to help pay for their education.  This is an excellent opportunity to see how Lakehead can further support your education. 

Value: Up to $2,300

  • General Bursary up to $1,500.00, and/or
  • Travel Bursary top up of up to $800.00

Eligibility:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be a citizen, permanent resident, or landed immigrant of Canada
  • Have no previous post-secondary education
  • Be a high school student entering directly from high school in the proceeding academic year, and
  • Travelling at least 700 km to attend your selected campus to be considered for the travel bursary.

Application: available January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2018 through myInfo! Please be sure to check back at that time!  

Awarding of Bursaries:

Initial round of entrance bursary offers to be extended on April 15 with the final round occurring on June 30. Early applications will be approved within 5 business days following the April 15 deadline allowing students to plan their budget for the 2017-2018 academic year. Approved bursaries will be credited to the qualified students Lakehead University account as of the first day of classes. 

 
Transfer & Mature Student Bursaries 

Are you a transfer or mature student who will be attending Lakehead University in the fall semester?  If yes, then you will want to apply for this opportunity.  The Transfer and Mature student bursary is available for students that are coming to Lakehead University, but not directly from high school.  

Value: Up to $1,000

Eligibility:

  • Be transferring to Lakehead University from a college or university, or coming to Lakehead University with no previous post-secondary education (but not directly from high school)
  • Be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident status 
  • Be enrolled in full-time undergraduate studies starting in September
  • Demonstrate financial need 
  • Prior consideration will be given to students who have applied for OSAP and/or other provincial student aid programs
