MINUTES

Friday, January 6, 2023

A meeting of the Faculty Council was held on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 10:00 am via Zoom.

Guest Speaker- Bill Perrault - SGEI:

B. Perrualt stated that he is currently looking for Contract Lecturers who are interested in teaching Face to Face in Fort Frances, ON for the coming Spring/Summer terms.   He mentioned that those departments interested in working with him can contact him directly or he will reach out to them.  S. Viitala will send him a current list of chairs/director in case he would like to contact them.  The S/S timetable will be available soon with the list of those classes scheduled so far.
The question was asked whether or not students who are not registered as SGEI could take those classes.  There will be follow up with regard to how the funding might work.

It was moved by J. Roth and seconded by A. Guttman that the agenda be approved.
        Carried.

Approval of Minutes
Approval of the minutes from December 9, 2022.  (J. Roth and seconded by A. Guttman)
The minutes were accepted as presented.

Department/School Reports.
i)  English
A. Guttman stated that there will be an EDI panel discussion on February 10, 2023 at 3:00 pm.  The panel
will consist of LU scholars who will speak about racialized faculty members.  More details will follow closer
to the date.

ii)  Music
E. Chugonov stated that the next LUMINA concert will take place on January 31, 2023 in the Jean McNulty Recital Hall, William H. Buset Centre for Music and Visual Arts.  He said that he will be performing.

Dean’s Report.
January 6, 2023

It was stated that the Provost was reviewing/working on hires for this year.  Once there is more information, it will be forwarded on to the various departments.
There is no word yet on FGS funding packages for graduate recruitment.  It appears that funding has been pulled back significantly so hopefully we will get an update soon.  There are more graduate students and SEM money is no longer available.  Enrollment targets increased every year which adds an additional burden.

Assistant Dean’s Report.
More work on the BA General is continuing.  There is a meeting soon with W. Melville, Education, and B. Birmingham to discuss options for recruitment in this area.  It is hoped that this can be fast-tracked.
The BA General is currently on a “holding pattern” with more news to follow in early January 2023.
