Lakehead University ranks Top 100 in the World for Sustainable Universities

The Times Higher Education's Impact Rankings for the world lists Lakehead University as the top Canadian University under 10,000 students and the only smaller comprehensive university in Canada. The University joined a select group of institutions from around the world in the top 100, ranking ahead of several top comprehensive and research-intensive Canadian universities. Of 766 universities from 85 countries, Lakehead has placed 98th in the world. The Impact Rankings are based on the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and more than 220 measurements.

Lakehead University scored highly in many of the Sustainable Development Goals, including:

  • top 20 for Lakehead's research on hunger, our teaching on food sustainability, our commitment to tackle food waste and address hunger among students and local communities
  • top 30 for Lakehead's research on poverty and our support for poor students and citizens in the local community
  • top 30 for Lakehead's research and education on, and support for, aquatic ecosystems
  • top 60 for Lakehead's research on social inequalities, our policies on discrimination and our commitment to recruiting staff and students from under-represented groups
  • top 60 for Lakehead's research on law and international relations, our participation as advisers for government, and our policies on academic freedom
  • top 70 for Lakehead's collaboration with other countries, the promotion of best practices and the publication of data

A set of performance metrics was developed and published at the Times Higher Education's Innovation and Impact Summit held at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea in 2019. These metrics were refined in 2020 and expanded to include all 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

This ranking reinforces Lakehead's place in Canada's top ten primarily undergraduate universities. It is also a testament to Lakehead's commitment to research and partnerships that not only engage students, but that also contribute to the betterment of our communities.
