Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP)

The Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) offers the same high-quality curriculum, academic outcomes, and total instructional hours as our Academic English Program (AEP)—delivered in an intensive 9-week format. Designed for motivated students, IAEP helps you develop the English language and academic skills needed to begin your undergraduate or graduate studies at Lakehead University sooner.

What you will learn

Program Levels

Students begin at the level that best matches their English proficiency. Placement is determined by:

• IELTS, TOEFL, or another accepted English proficiency test (taken within the last two years)
• ELC Online Placement Test (available if you do not have an official test score)

The Intensive Academic English Program consists of 2 levels, starting from Level 5.

• Placement into Academic English Levels: these scores determine the level at which students begin their Academic English studies. For example, an IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) places a student in Level 5 of the ELC program.

• Additional Placement Testing: students with TOEIC scores (reading and listening only) must complete additional speaking and writing placement tests administered by the ELC.

• Concurrent Study Option: students in Level 5 may take one concurrent undergraduate course alongside the AEP program, as long as it does not conflict with their AEP schedule. Some programs require a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 or higher.

• Duolingo English Test: applicants must send their Duolingo results directly to Lakehead University. Tests taken after July 1, 2024, must include subscores.

In-Person Learning Model Sample Schedule

IAEP in-person class schedule: Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm, total of 325 hours per semester. 

Virtual Learning (Online) Model Sample Schedule

IAEP Online class schedule: Monday to Friday, 7am-1pm, total of 325 hours per semester.
