Important Update: Closure of Lakehead University's English Language Centre and Academic English Program
Lakehead University's English Language Centre (ELC) will officially close on December 31, 2026. Consequently, the Academic English Program (AEP), as currently offered, will be discontinued.
What does this mean for prospective international students?
Effective January 2027:
Lakehead’s Academic English Program (AEP) will no longer be available as an option to meet Lakehead University's English Language Proficiency (ELP) admission requirements.
Prospective students must meet the University's applicable English Language Proficiency requirements prior to enrolling in their academic programs.
Lakehead University will still continue to issue conditional Letters of Acceptance (LOAs) to anyone who has not yet met the English language proficiency requirements for their program, with the condition that they must demonstrate their English Language Proficiency through one of the accepted options.
Note: Any students who are already enrolled, and have already commenced their Academic English Program (AEP) at Lakehead University, have been advised of their options to complete their intended studies.
There are Several Ways to Meet Lakehead’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements:
- Successfully complete and achieve the required scores of one of Lakehead University’s recognized language tests: IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge Academic English Test, DuoLingo, Pearson Test of English, Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL). Please review the minimum required ELP test results based on your academic program of interest.
- Present a Medium of Instruction Letter based on your academic background to satisfy ELP requirements. For details, please visit the Graduate English requirements page or the Undergraduate English requirements page.
- Attend and complete a Lakehead-recognized Canadian English language program through a Lakehead language pathway partner.
- Pursue English language upgrading opportunities in your own country that can prepare you to take one of the recognized ELP language tests.
