For course registration, please follow the recommendations for 4th year as listed in the calendar. If you find the need to take courses in a different sequence, I recommend that you contact me so that we can discuss your needs. Doing this early makes it easier later-on to meet all graduation requirements.

Some of you will notice on their transcript a note “inel without consultation”. If this is the case, you need to meet with me before you can register on-line. Please email me to set up an appointment.

For all of you, there are three points, I’d like you to consider before registering:

 1. Taking First Year Courses

There are two statements in the Calendar regarding 1st year courses, the second one is particularly important for you:

  • A student may not count among his/her electives more than two courses at the first year level beyond those stipulated in the normal first year requirements.
  • A student may not take a first year course in the final year of the program or the final two academic terms of the program in the case of programs that do not follow the academic year format, except with the written approval of the Dean of the Faculty.

 2. Taking one-on-one Research Courses

There is a regulation regarding the number of research courses allowed per term and per calendar year:

A maximum of 0.5 FCE per term and a maximum of 1.0 FCE per calendar year can be taken from any combination of directed reading, independent research, and thesis courses. Students can only take one research thesis course in their honours degrees. Exceptions require permission of the academic advisor. (Some examples of this type of course are: APBI 4811, BIOL 3990, PHYS 4501.)

This may affect you if you plan to take an Honours Thesis in your 4th year, as then you would not be able to take another research course in the same year.

 3. Meeting Graduation Requirements

As you sign up for your last year of courses, we should make sure, that you will have completed all courses required for the Program. It is important to do this now, because you may not be able to register for any missing courses later in the year, and if you miss requirements, the Registrar’s Office can (and has in the past) deny graduation.

Please use the Progress Template to track all requirements. If you have not yet met with me to fill in this progress template, please email me so that we can set up a time to meet.
