English Prerequisites

  • A prerequisite is a course that is required prior to taking an advanced course.
  • Effective fall 2016, there are four compulsory courses for all English majors: ENGL 1115 – Foundations of Literary Study, ENGL 2250 - History of English Literature I, ENGL 2251 - History of English Literature II, and ENGL 2913 - Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theories.
  • ENGL 1115 should be taken in your first year, while the second year courses may be taken in any order, but are highly recommended to be taken prior to upper year courses.  ENGL 2913 is a prerequisite for all Honours students and ideally should be taken in the second year before students continue into third and fourth year courses.
  • Students considering an English Minor must attain an overall average of 60% in three FCEs in English, including two half-courses at the first year level. One of those half-courses must be ENGL 1115.
