Students develop their knowledge and understanding of the principles of primary health care and the Canadian health care system; public health; cultural/social/economic aspects of health and illness; history of disease; health promotion and disease prevention for individuals, communities, and populations; workplace health and safety; and research methods and critical appraisal, epidemiology, and statistics. Particular foci will include the determinants of health, health-related risk factors, interprofessional roles, and the impact of health policy on health

Students continue to learn about the social and cultural perspectives on individual and population health, community and public health, occupational health and the social determinants of health. Development of critical appraisal skills and evidence-based medicine at the patient and population levels is emphasized. The application of various epidemiological study designs and statistics are discussed

The course will build on Year 1 concepts. In addition, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of mental health; substance abuse; literacy and health; palliative care; public health risks and reporting; screening; telemedicine; and, environmental health. Students will expand their working knowledge of epidemiology and statistics and use search tools to gather population-level data to profile communities and apply epidemiological data to understand the magnitude of various health conditions and health-related issues such as obesity, diabetes, intimate partner violence, HIV/AIDS, and cancer

Using the Canadian Community Economic Development Network National Policy Council’s definition of social economy, which states that the social economy “consists of association based initiatives founded on values of service to members of the community rather than generating profits”, students will critically assess social economy theory and the application of social economy theory to the Aboriginal community. In particular, students will evaluate the so-called “five defining principles of social economy theory” and determine if they are part of the continuing colonial legacy as is expressed through “neoliberal” economic thinking or if they are part of a growing movement towards grassroot, community economic development.

The course content examines social issues facing communities in Canada's North, discusses the unique social, economic, and historical conditions and current challenges, and compares the situation with that of other circumpolar regions. Challenges will be linked to social theories of change in an attempt to understand the global context of these issues

An examination of differing conceptions and standards of justice and their application to the relationship between individuals (including race, gender, abilities, age, and sexual orientation), socio-economic classes, cultures, nations, and generations

An introduction to interdisciplinary questions about the creation of a just society and the root causes of injustice and oppression. Students will explore how social movements develop solutions to problems as diverse as poverty, ethnic oppression, gender and sexual inequalities, discrimination against Aboriginal people in Canada, and policies framing immigration

An exploration of social policy from a critical perspective which seeks to expose those systemic inequalities in society which encourage social injustice, social inequality and social stratification. The domination and permeation of social values and social constructions will also be examined as well as the relationship among power, social policy, social planning and social change theories. The subsequent impact for geographic and cultural communities will be examined, in Northern, rural or urban contexts.

Designed to promote an awarness, understanding, and appreciation for Aboriginal people. Emphasis will be on culture, values, beliefs, and appropriate intervention strategies for social workers in terms of knowledge, skills, and methods. Issues of social policy, programs and services, and the practice of social work in First Nations communities will be explored. Aboriginal involvement, participation, and culture are important dimensions to this course

An examination of how classical and contemporary sociological theorists have conceptualized nature and our relationship to it, including the enviornment, technology, and other aspects of the nonhuman world.
