About the Event

Professor Antonia Maioni is Professor of Political Science in the Department of Political Science and the Institute for Health and Social Policy at McGill University and President of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the national not-for-profit platform and public policy advocate for Canada’s scholars, students and practitioners in the humanities and social sciences.

Join her for a keynote address on the public value of humanities and social science research and on finding new ways to maximize its impact both inside and outside the university. Prof. Maioni will address the relevance of humanities and social science research to Canada in general and to Northern Ontario communities in particular and will conclude by commenting on the challenging research climate we live in today and why it is more important than ever to support people-centred research and innovation as well as celebrate our accomplishments.

About the Speaker

Antonia Maioni is Professor of Political Science at McGill University in the Department of Political Science and the Institute of Health and Social Policy. From 2001 to 2011, she served as the Director of Interdisciplinary McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, while holding the position of William Dawson Scholar at McGill University.

Trained as a political scientist, Professor Maioni studied at St. Mary’s University, earned a B.A. in Political Science and French at Université Laval, an M.A. from Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Northwestern University.

She has held visiting appointments at Harvard’s Center for European Studies, the North American Studies Program at Duke University, and the European University Institute in Fiesole, Italy, as well as teaching at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. At McGill University, she teaches in the Department of Political Science and in the Fundamentals of Medicine and Dentistry, and is a member of the International Masters in Health Leadership team in the Desautels Faculty of Management.

Professor Maioni has published widely in the fields of Canadian and comparative politics, with a particular focus on public policy, social policy and health care reform. A recipient of many research grants, her most recent research projects were funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and the Max Bell Foundation. Her latest book, Health Care in Canada, was published by Oxford University Press (Canada) in 2014. In addition, she contributes to the research community as a peer reviewer for CHIR and as a member of CIFAR’s Research Council.

In addition to teaching and scholarship, she is active in the wider academic and public community, having organized numerous workshops, roundtables and conferences on issues of public policy at McGill University, as well as participating regularly in academic and policy settings in Canada, the US and abroad. She is also a frequent media commentator on Canadian and Quebec politics and public policy, in both English and French, is a regular political analyst for the CTV News and a contributor to the Globe and Mail.

Antonia Maioni has served on the boards of the Institute for Research on Public Policy, the Banff Forum, the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, the McCord Museum of Canadian History, the Priory School of Montreal, as well as serving as a mentor for the Action Canada leadership program and the Loran Scholars/Canadian Merit Scholarships. She is currently on the Board of the Jeanne Sauvé Scholars Program and the Sacred Heart School of Montreal.
