JUMP

About the JUMP Program:

The pandemic has created increased uncertainty for new students in the student life cycle from recruitment to retention. The program JUMP aims to connect and engage new International students and support their transition to Canadian life and Lakehead University. This six-week summer program (June-August) fosters students’ belonging and connection to student life at Lakehead pre-arrival.

This program offers an opportunity for new international students to engage with their peers, staff, faculty and the community as part of a connective pre-arrival transition program. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in small connected groups with student leadership (Skippers) to support. The program has capstones that provide growth in leadership and teambuilding. Participants receive leadership development and team-building leadership certificate, including credit on their Co-Curricular Record.

 Who are the Skippers?

Skippers are a vital part of the JUMP program; they ensure the students in the program thrive! Skippers are upper-year Lakehead students that help the new and potential first-year international students learn about life in Canada and at Lakehead. Skippers will be assigned a group of five students that they will lead and be their number one support person throughout the program.

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 am are dedicated to live programming on Zoom; this includes team-building activities and learning new skills/information about life at LU. Skippers must attend these sessions, as it is crucial that they can fully support their group and encourage them to participate. There will be special events and asynchronous programming that Skippers may need to support their groups through. Skippers may be asked to meet with their groups, plan and host programming, and support LUI JUMP staff outside these synchronous hours.

Being a Skipper brings opportunities to grow your leadership skills, practice mentoring first-year students, enhance your cultural intelligence, and learn how to present yourself professionally. Skippers also earn a leadership development and team-building leadership certificate, including credit on their Co-Curricular Record. Also this works towards completion of the Lakehead Global Certificate and includes a career reference from the Director of International Student Services upon successful program delivery completion.
