About the Session
This panel features members of the Thunder Bay Voluntary Local Review (VLR) Working Group, who represent a range of government and non - profit organizations, and researchers from Lakehead University. The specific purpose of the Thunder Bay VLR is to monitor progress on the UN's Sustainable Development goals for the Thunder Bay Region. Panelists will describe the background to the project, importance of the VLR for the Thunder Bay region, activities to date and next steps.

St. Joseph’s Care Group offers unique opportunities for Indigenous health research collaborations. Hear from researchers who have partnered with St. Joseph’s Care Group, and learn about opportunities for Indigenous-focused research within the areas of mental health, rehabilitation, and long-term care. Transferring educational practices between countries is an effective means to achieve educational goals but is fraught with concerns. This panel brings together members from the Commonwealth of Learning, University of the South Pacific, and Lakehead University for a discussion about experiences with transferring youth work microcredential between small states.

Carbon sequestration - a solution to increasing greenhouse gas emissions across the globe - has emerged as a top scientific priority for nations grappling with the severe consequences of a warming planet. A recent Lakehead partnership sought to approach the issue at a local scale while looking towards the future of a global effort.

Alongside the COVID-19 pandemic is a divisive, attention-grabbing, obsession-inducing infodemic. Moving beyond the discourse of fake vs real news, we probe the relative invisibility of algorithms and the hidden-in-plain-sight codes and conventions of old and new media to provide some perspectives and frames for understanding major news events of 2020.

About the Session
For more than 50 years, the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area in Northwestern Ontario has studied whole lakes and their watersheds to understand how human populations affect our freshwaters. This globally unique organization continues to tackle important issues like habitat restoration, plastics, oil spills, climate change and pharmaceuticals all while focusing on non-invasive monitoring techniques.
