Global Affairs Canada Scholarship Students

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) provides scholarships to support inbound students to come to one of Lakehead University's campuses to participate in short-term study or research projects. There are three scholarships available: Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED), Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP), and Study in Canada Scholarships (SICS). On this page you can find relevant links and information pertaining to each GAC scholarship, including eligibility information, scholarship amounts, and more. Partner institutions of Lakehead University will be contacted once the annual call for applications is open with instructions on how to nominate their students.

Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED)
  • Program Summary: SEED provides opportunities for students from partner institutions (MOU) from ASEAN countries who are interested in study/research in areas that contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at York University.   • Eligible Countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR)), Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, or Vietnam
  • Award Amounts: up to $15,900

  • Deadline: Call for applications for the 2024-2025 academic year is now open. Results are typically released in early June. All partners who nominated students will be notified once Global Affairs Canada announces the results of selected candidates.

Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP)
  • Program Summary: ELAP provides students from partner institutions located in Latin America and the Caribbean with short-term mobility opportunities for study or research at Lakehead University.     • Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos
    • Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama
    • North America: Mexico
    • South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
  • Award Amounts: up to $11,100

    • Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda
  • Award Amounts: up to $12,700

Information for Successful GAC Students

Support for Incoming GAC Students
Inbound students on Global Affairs Canada (GAC) scholarship programs will receive a variety of support from the Global Engagement team prior to and during their arrival. Please refer to our Inbound Global ME Student website to learn more about the services and supports available as you prepare to study at Lakehead University.

Scholarship Information
Successful candidates for a GAC scholarship will receive their funding shortly after their arrival at Lakehead University. The scholarship is intended for the following expenses:

  • visa or study/work permit fees
  •  airfare via the most direct and economical route
  •  health insurance
  • living expenses, such as accommodation, utilities and food
  • ground transportation, including a public transportation pass
  • books and supplies required for their study or research, excluding computers and other equipment

All successful candidates will be sent detailed information prior to arrival about the scholarship distribution.
