Where We’re At: A Conversation with Black Students on Human Rights

3:00 – 4:00 p.m. 

Join host Jonathan Erua of the Office of Human Rights and Equity for an intimate round-table conversation on the state of human rights for Black students at Lakehead and beyond. The panelists will discuss the meaning, process, and outcomes of what a robust human rights response could look like for Lakehead. 

AFCASA will be running a mini seminar with Lakehead University students as well as other individuals who have started businesses either during school or once they've graduated. They talk about the challenges and obstacles they had to overcome, the most fulfilling part of running a business and so much more. If you are interested in one day running your business or you're looking for a black business to support, or you're just curious, join us to learn something. 

This is an educational and fun trivia game night to learn about Black History, AFCASA and much more. This game night is a more informal setting where participants can learn fun and interesting facts based on all the events that AFCASA has run up until this point in the month. It is also an opportunity to win e-gift cards and cool BHM inspired prizes.

Join LUI in a stimulating social, cultural, and political conversation with Alice Mphafi, activist and social worker for racialized and marginalized women as she shares her scholarship and lived experience.  Alice Mphafi was born and brought up in Johannesburg, South Africa in the mid 1960's. Alice is the youngest of five from a family of freedom fighters. She moved to Canada in 1991 and lived in Vancouver until 2003 when she relocated to a Northern BC resource based town, Prince George to attend a northern university. Alice is a graduate in social work from the University of Northern BC and she will share her experience as a student activist in South Africa where she was arrested and harassed by apartheid police fighting for ther basic human rights. Alice will also share her lived experience, barriers, and challenges she has faced as a Black women both in South Africa and as an Black student in a northern community in Canada.  We hope you will make time for a memorable and meaningful discussion.
