Elder GENE NOWEGEJICK, will be conducting a Sweat Lodge Ceremony on Friday, September 29th, 2023 starting at 3 pm at the Lakehead University Sweat Lodge site. Wear loose clothing, such as t-shirts, shorts and long skirts. Be sure to bring a towel. Participants are encouraged to bring the Elder a tobacco offering which is available at ISSC (UC1007). If you are on your moon time you must not participate in the Sweat Lodge Ceremony or handle ceremonial items.

The Indigenous Student Services Centre, in conjunction with Oshki-Pimache-O-Win; the Wenjack Education Institute, Confederation College, Seven Generations Education Institute, Matawa Post-Secondary Education, Northern Nishnawbe Education Council, and Eabametoong First Nation are excited to host Maadaadizi 2023 which means starts a journey in the Ojibwe language.  This in-person orientation event will be held at Marina Park on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. We have set aside this special day to welcome post-secondary Indigenous students and their families to their respective institutions and to the City of Thunder Bay.
 
The day will include musical performances by First Nation artists Ernest Monias, Nick Sherman, and Sara Kae. Information booths by various organizations will be set-up, children’s activities, prizes and refreshments will be available. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. We hope to see you there, rain or shine!

Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux served as Vice Provost for Indigenous Initiatives at Lakehead University for three years. Effective September 2016 she was appointed as the 1st Indigenous Chair for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada for Lakehead University and continues to develop pathways forward to reconciliation across Canada.
