Reporting to the Department Chair, the incumbent will provide administrative support to the Chair and faculty of the Health Sciences Department to facilitate daily operations. This position will be the front line support to assist in faculty and student issues. The following is a brief outline of the responsibilities.  

DUTIES:

  • Provide general administrative assistance (e.g., draft/produce correspondence, confidential reports and proposals, composing memos/letters/forms, course material, course evaluations, minutes, agendas, photocopying etc.); mail services
  • Use of curriculum navigator system for calendar changes;
  • Respond to ongoing and frequent inquiries from active students; refer as necessary to Graduate Coordinators or Department Chair.
  • Coordinate thesis process including monitoring of completion & processing of required forms, defense presentations, external examiner reviews; etc.
  • Notify students of course cancellations.
  • Coordinate student attendance at annual CPHA Conference.
  • Monitor submission of required travel forms of students selected to attend Department-subsidized conferences to ensure reimbursement to the student.
  • Coordinate Human Resources administrative requirements;
  • Maintain budget verifications and receipts of purchases;
  • Purchase relevant supplies; submit Maintenance work orders
  • Organize and maintain the office filing system;
  • Schedule meetings, events, equipment for Chair, faculty, etc.;
  • Respond to counter/telephone/e-mail/walk-in inquiries as required, directing inquiries as  necessary;
  • Collaborate and work with administration and other University departments in the efficient performance of duties
  • Organize and maintain the general office areas;
  • Perform other related duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Post secondary education along with two years' related administrative assistant experience required
  • Proficiency with PCs, general website maintenance, and various office programs including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel);
  • Proficiency with Datatel system an asset;
  • Ability to interact with students, staff and the public, exercising diplomacy and discretion;
  • Excellent communication, spelling and grammar skills, both written and verbal;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills;
  • Excellent administrative skills to ensure efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Initiative and judgment skills to ensure matters are addressed accurately and appropriately;
  • Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment;
  • Ability to work and handle all office duties in a confidential manner;
  • Ability to multitask a variety of high priority duties and work under the pressure of deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player;
  • Ability to use a variety of office equipment,

Under the supervision of the Director of Social Work, and in collaboration with the Field Office in Thunder Bay, the Field Education Coordinator is responsible for the on-going development, maintenance, and evaluation of the HBSW field education program in Orillia.  Primary duties include the coordination of the placement process, development and maintenance of placement opportunities in collaboration with community agencies and partners as well as the facilitation of field orientation and provision of student field seminars, supervisory training and consultation for Field Instructors.  Additional responsibilities include coordination of the placement evaluation process, final grade assignment and participation in recruitment initiatives.  The incumbent will work collaboratively with the Field Education Coordinators at both the Orillia and Thunder Bay campuses.
 
The successful applicant will have an MSW degree and be registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.  Knowledge of community resources in Simcoe, Muskoka, York, Durham, Peel, and Toronto is essential. Prior experience in Field Education or Social Work Education would be a strong asset for this position, as would experience working in a University setting.  The successful applicant will have strong program management, organizational, communication, and time management skills

Reporting to the Associate Registrar, the Academic & Curriculum Development Coordinator is responsible for playing a key role in the full cycle development and maintenance of curriculum. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that the integrity of Lakehead University's credentials, as approved by the Senate, are translated into the Academic Calendar. The incumbent will also be responsible to continually build, monitor change and develop the degree audit system for all active programs and apprise students, chairs/directors, faculty and other staff on the auditing process and how to interpret degree requirements and regulations. The Academic & Curriculum Development Coordinator will also provide administrative support to the Chair of the Senate Undergraduate Studies Committee and the Chair of the Senate Academic Committee Sub-Committee for Regulations, work closely with the Secretariat Office as well as Chairs/Administrative support for other subcommittees.

Lakehead University invites applications for a SSHRC Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in New Media and Literary Culture. All scholars working at the intersection of media studies and literary studies are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in applicants whose research takes account of new media (analog and/or digital) and their implications for literary culture, including but not limited to work in the areas of comparative textual media, electronic literatures, digital poetics, writing machines, emerging textualities, intersections of print and new media culture, digital literary scholarship, new media as literary form, the history and future of reading, book history, and media archaeology. A secondary specialization in Writing and Rhetoric would be an asset.

We seek an exceptional scholar with an outstanding record of innovative publication and research, and a demonstrated ability to participate in and foster collaborative research clusters. The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of English at LakeheadÙs Thunder Bay campus and will be expected to play an active role in the English DepartmentÙs undergraduate and graduate programs. It is expected that the successful candidateÙs research program will provide research opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary, annual research grant, and a reduced teaching load. The Department of Geography is seeking an energetic, motivated individual to manage the Lakehead University Geospatial Data Centre (LUGDC). The successful candidate will be responsible for the ongoing collection, development, organization, and maintenance of digital geospatial data, as well as a paper map collection and other cartographic resources. Specific duties include production of publication-quality maps, fulfilling student and faculty data requests, and developing partnerships both on-campus and with external clients.  Additionally, the incumbent is expected to supervise the usage of the data centre and provide assistance to students, staff and the broader university community in accessing the data centre's resources.   

Ideally, the incumbent has an undergraduate degree in Geography, Environmental Science or a related field, with post-graduate training and/or work experience in geomatics.  The individual should have a demonstrated working knowledge and experience using common software packages in cartography, Geographic Information Systems, digital image processing, graphics production, and spatial database management.  Strong organizational and communication skills, coupled with an ability to promote and market products and services provided by the GDC, both within and external to the university, are essential for this position.

Reporting to the Manager of Web Development Services, the Information Designer: Enrolment Initiatives is instrumental in the focus on creating and developing content, design, editing and on other web-related initiatives that enhance strategic enrolment initiatives.  
Overall the Information Designer: Enrolment Initiatives, in partnership with a lead Information Designer, is responsible for creating and maintaining the information architecture, developing and assisting with content placement and enhancements, as well as providing graphic creative to facilitate effective communication on the Lakehead University website.
This is a contract position for up to three years subject to budgetary availability.

Job Requirements:

  • Requires a diploma, certification, or degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or, Web Development
  • Preferred minimum of two to three years experience working in a post-secondary education setting
  • Proficient with web programming technologies such as HTML and CSS
  • Proficient with website design and management
  • Familiarity with latest developments in web-based best practices and W3C Standards
  • Must have knowledge about production techniques for a website, including User-Centred Design, storyboard development, information architecture, document analysis and site analysis (to maintain logical site organization)
  • Must be familiar with the Drupal Content Management System (CMS)
  • Should be familiar with MS Word, Excel, PDF, E-mail, and Adobe Suite - in particular Photoshop and Dreamweaver
  • Must demonstrate excellent graphical design skills
  • Able to write for the web in a fashion that speaks to the target audience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to implement effective customer service systems
  • Ability to manage and prioritize to meet deadlines

The Manager provides a secure work environment, delivering a content management system as well as custom-built solutions. The Manager troubleshoots, identifies and strategizes web-based priorities, at times consulting third-party developers and applications to maintain effective web-based communication tools for Lakehead University.

Job Requirements:

Reporting to the Program Chair, the successful incumbent will be responsible for planning and performing highly specialized and complex technical duties for the School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks & Tourism. The incumbent will be working collaboratively with faculty, under their general supervision but working independently in planning, organizing and executing projects and duties. Extensive use of judgement, originality and creativity is required. The successful incumbent must have extensive risk management experience, expertise in outdoor recreation activities, is current with industry standards, and a leader in the field to promote the profession for our students.

Duties include:

Plans, performs and provides technical support, advice and assistance to students and faculty during laboratory classes and field studies, designing and constructing materials where necessary.

Assumes responsibility for the allocation and maintenance of equipment and for recommendations concerning repairs or replacement of equipment; responsible for coordination and maintenance of the laboratory work areas; responsible for inventory.

In consultation with faculty, designs, prepares, and instructs student laboratories for and in classroom and field settings; may also initiate research projects in conjunction with faculty.

Where applicable, assumes financial responsibilities for his/her area of specialization, including assistance in budget preparation and competent control of expenditures.

May supervise technical/technological support staff including organizing work schedules and handling the required related administration duties.

Coordinates the usage of laboratory equipment and space.

Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, with other health and safety-related legislation and standards, and with such workplace practices as outlined by his/her immediate supervisor.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Master 's Degree or equivalent education and experience may be considered.

Working knowledge and experience of safety and risk management and be able to lead students in various settings. 

Strong organizational and communication skills.

Teaching experience and advanced certification in a number of outdoor recreation areas.

Class F Ontario driver 's licence or equivalent.

Research Assistant Intern
Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute - 12 month contract



 
The Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute is seeking a Research Assistant Intern.
 
The successful candidate will be working in a laboratory that is based at the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI); a health research institute that is fully affiliated with Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. TBBRI has three key research themes -- Advanced Detection Devices, Imaging Guided Interventions, and Probe Development and Biomarker Exploration. This laboratory is guided under the Advanced Detection Devices scope and focuses on using hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), an innovative technology that provides spectacularly detailed images of structures and processes within the body. HP gas MRI has the potential to allow medical researchers and health care providers to significantly improve diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases, including lung diseases, stroke, and cancer. This job will include involvement in all phases of design, construction, and optimization HP gas MRI technologies for pulmonary functional imaging, brain imaging and other techniques using HP gas MRI.

Specific duties will include MRI experiments with hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas, assistance with experiment scheduling, data archiving, and post-processing and analysis of images from the MR experiments. The intern will also prepare and work on Health Canada and Research Ethic Board requirements, clinical protocol development, as well as in organizing studies with animals or patients and verifying any experiment or trial is scientifically sound and clearly described.

This position would be suitable for individuals who have a Masters degree or experience in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or Health Sciences. High ranking undergraduate students will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. The individual should have a good background in physics, mathematics, chemistry, programming or health research services. The individual should also exemplary writing skills, experience in Health Canada and Research Ethic Board applications is considered an asset. Experience in medical imaging, specifically Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is also considered an asset.

DUTIES:

Coordinates all accommodation requests for long term clients;

Reconciles client files to produce invoices, receipt payments and reconcile outstanding files;

Creates and posts schedule of events;

Maintains the Conference Services office booking databases;

Assists with the training and scheduling of part-time and student staff;

Reporting to the Manager of Graduate Studies, the Graduate Funding Officer is the primary point person in the development, implementation and coordination of Graduate Funding and is accountable for the administration of graduate internal and external funding in the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

DUTIES:
  • Coordinate and manage the external awards competitions.
  • Responsible for and oversees the implementation of University external policies and regulations with regards to awards management, including academic qualifications, enrolment eligibility, research eligibility, and funding announcements.
  • Is the liaison with external agencies and representatives for all graduate external funding programs.
  • Provides comprehensive reviews of graduate scholarship applications.
  • Responsible for the production and updating of scholarship procedures.
  • Develops, prepares and delivers workshops and training for departments on annual competition procedures and processes.
  • Prepares the collection of data and completes reports on institutional funding reports for National and Provincial Funding agencies.
  • Creates and maintains financial reports of all graduate funding.
  • Completes all provincial and federal granting reports as required by the federal and provincial granting agencies.
  • Reviews and monitors budgeted monies that are designated to graduate students.
  • Provides one-on-one guidance to students in financial difficulty or crisis.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Highly developed written and oral skills, great attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities and interruptions.
  • Ability to manage conflict and disagreement.
  • A high degree of knowledge in transcript evaluation at both the domestic and international level for scholarship eligibility purposes.

Lakehead Legal Services is Lakehead University's Student Legal Aid Clinic.  Our mandate is to provide excellent legal service to low income clients, as well as an experience based educational program for Lakehead Law students.  Our work includes individual case files, teaching, community outreach, advocacy projects and public legal education.

We are seeking an energetic, enthusiastic lawyer with sound judgement, and excellent interpersonal skills, to join the clinic as a Review Counsel.  The clinic will be providing legal services for low-income clients, initially, in the areas of Criminal Law, and Provincial Offences.  With the addition of a Review Counsel, we are seeking to expand our areas of service.  The ideal candidate will have expertise in a two or more of the following of areas of law:  Residential Tenancies, Small Claims (Civil Litigation), Consumer Rights, University Affairs (Student Discipline), Criminal Law, Criminal Injuries Compensation, and Poverty Law (including Income Security, Immigration, Human Rights or Employment standards / Wrongful Dismissal).  Experience in a Clinic environment is preferred.  The Review Counsel may also be called upon to teach a half or full course equivalent within the Faculty of Law.  To that end, we seek individuals who enjoy being in the classroom and have a passion for teaching.

Reporting to the Clinic Director, the Review Counsel's responsibilities include:

 

  • Comprehensive and detailed supervision and evaluation of the work of law students including written and oral advocacy, client management, file management, legal analysis, legal research, legal drafting, legal problem solving, negotiations and professional ethics;
  • Provision of legal services directly to clients when necessary;
  • Development, implementation and supervision of public legal education, community outreach and advocacy projects;
  • Assisting the Director with delivery and evaluation of the Clinic course or other teaching assignments as determined;



Qualifications:

  • JD or LLB degree;
  • Membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada (licenced to practise law in Ontario);
  • Minimum of 5-15 years experience as a practising lawyer;
  • A demonstrated ability in serving low-income clients and persons with disabilities in a respectful and sensitive manner;
  • Interest and experience in areas of social justice and poverty law;
  • Proven ability to supervise and mentor students;
  • Familiarity with Legal Aid Ontario, its mandate and structure.
