Dear Lakehead,

Wow! What an incredible Thrive Week we just had! It's hard to believe another year has come and gone, and we're so thrilled that this, our 6th annual Thrive Week, was bigger and better than ever. The energy and enthusiasm from everyone across campus truly made it special.

From the self-paced challenges of the Thrive Week Challenge Card and the heartwarming messages on the Digital Wall of Champions, to gaining valuable insights at the GreenShield and TELUS Health presentations, and exploring resources at the HR Open House, there was something for everyone. We loved seeing so many of you embrace the outdoors at Procrastinate & Skate and cheer on our Thunderwolves at the Volleyball and Hockey games! These are just a few of the many highlights that made this year so memorable.

Thrive Week is all about prioritizing well-being, and we hope you found the various events and activities beneficial. Your participation and engagement are what make this week so impactful.

A special thank you to Lindsey Watcher from Student Health and Wellness for spearheading this annual initiative. Her dedication and vision are instrumental to Thrive Week's continued success.  We also extend our sincere gratitude to all those who collaborated and supported the development and implementation of this amazing event. Your combined efforts made it truly exceptional!

In the summer of 2017, the Superior Mental Wellness @ Work project asked the community to portray their mental health at work through creative photography.

REAL images and stories were submitted by REAL people who bravely and honestly answered two questions:

  • How do you really feel at work?
  • How do you take care of your mental health at work?

This exhibit features a collection of photos and captions selected from the submissions received. Each one is unique but collectively, they shed light on the reality of mental health in the workplace. The goals of the campaign are to reduce the stigma associated with talking about employee mental health and to inspire positive change towards healthy workplaces for everyone!

Check out some of the entries received in the video below.

***The Get Real Photovoice campaign is a project of the Superior Mental Wellness @ Work advisory group. Their mission is to create workplace environments that reduce psychological hazards and maintain positive mental health for employees in Thunder Bay and District.

Summary

Caleigh and Jonathon discussed the upcoming Thrive Week GreenShield event and the use of Zoom for the event. They also presented on GreenShield's 65-year history, its mission to improve health for Canadians, and its new healthcare services and tools, including telemedicine, digital pharmacy, mental health services, and a new Well-being portal. They also introduced the GreenShield Women's Mental Health Program, the GreenShield Card, and the new GreenShield website, emphasizing the importance of self-service online and the various ways to connect with GreenShield.

GreenShield's 65-Year Health Improvement Journey
Caleigh from GreenShield discussed the organization's 65-year history and its mission to improve health for Canadians. GreenShield has been a champion of better health since 1957, and as a social enterprise, it reinvests earnings and deploys services to underserved communities. Caleigh highlighted several initiatives, including a mental health initiative, oral health care, and an essential medicines program. GreenShield now offers a range of services, including a new benefit portal called GreenShield Plus, which provides access to health claims, dental claims, digital health services, and telemedicine. The telemedicine solution aims to make healthcare more accessible and convenient for Canadians.
GreenShield's Healthcare Services and Tools
The presentation covers GreenShield's new healthcare services and tools. Caleigh explains the telemedicine service offering 24/7 virtual access to doctors, prescriptions, and medical records management. She discusses the digital pharmacy with lower costs, medication management features, and home delivery options. The mental health services provide personalized therapist matching within 72 hours and free initial consultations. A new Well-being portal offers interactive health resources like videos, quizzes, and meditation guides. Additionally, a series of mental health e-learning modules created by Michael Landsberg are available, with an upcoming episode promoted during the meeting. The services aim to provide convenient, affordable, and personalized healthcare access for employees.
GreenShield Women's Mental Health Program
Caleigh discussed the GreenShield Women's Mental Health Program, which offers free, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed virtual therapy and a complimentary one-year subscription to internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for women, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals in Canada. She also introduced the GreenShield Card, which provides access to benefits and can be used on the GreenShield App without needing data. Caleigh highlighted the various ways to connect with GreenShield, including the contact center, the GreenShield Plus Portal, and through providers. She emphasized the importance of self-service online through the GreenShield Plus Portal and provided a walkthrough on how to register for an account.
GreenShield Website Features and Support
Caleigh demonstrated the GreenShield website, highlighting its features and functionalities. She emphasized the importance of checking coverage before incurring costs and using the crisis hotline for immediate support. She also explained how to find a provider, submit a claim, and manage direct deposit information. Caleigh further discussed the new well-being program, which replaced the Change for Life program, and how it learns and suggests health and wellness resources based on user needs. She also mentioned the care navigation feature for finding resources based on health needs and the support section for accessing a crisis hotline, help center, and call center for assistance.
Telemedicine and Mental Health Services
Caleigh demonstrated the telemedicine and mental health services available to the team. She explained how the system works, emphasizing that it removes barriers to seeking help and allows users to find a counselor that suits their needs. She highlighted the crisis hotline, well-being assessment, and counselor preferences, including language, specialties, and religious or spiritual expertise. Caleigh also showed how to book an appointment with a counselor and how to connect with a GP through telemedicine. She noted that while telemedicine is useful for minor issues, it may not be suitable for major respiratory problems. Lastly, she introduced the well-being tool, but did not elaborate on its features.
Introducing GreenShield Website and App
Caleigh introduced the new GreenShield website, highlighting its features such as daily activities, tracking, well-being questionnaire, and various workout options. She also mentioned the potential for rewards and more content to be added. Jonathon added that the website is relatively new and has replaced the previous Change for Life program. He shared his personal experience with the website, including how it tracks his steps and provides health score recommendations. Jonathon also emphasized the importance of using the tools for personal well-being and encouraged others to explore the website and app. Caleigh concluded by recommending the GreenShield Plus app for easy access to the website's features.
Health and Dental Plan Features
Caleigh discussed the features of the health and dental plan, including the drug lookup feature and the ability to access an ID card with or without data. She emphasized the importance of being aware of any large expenditures and contacting customer service beforehand to avoid surprises. Caleigh also advised using the find a provider tool to locate providers who submit claims directly to GreenShield, shopping around for providers to save money, checking invoices before submission, and using traceable payment methods. Lastly, she recommended submitting claims as they occur to avoid audits and to keep receipts for 12 months in case of an audit.
GreenShield Partnerships and Healthcare Access
Caleigh presented on GreenShield partnerships and their resources, emphasizing their mission to provide more access to healthcare. She also clarified that only traceable payments, such as e-transfers, are accepted for reimbursement, not cash payments. Jonathon thanked Caleigh for her presentation and encouraged everyone to explore GreenShield's resources. He also reminded the team about the upcoming EAP presentation and the Thunder Bay Thrive Week events. Jonathon and Caleigh expressed their appreciation for the team's participation and wished everyone well.

Summary

Laura and Jonathon discussed their preparations for a presentation about TELUS Health EAP, with Jonathon moderating and Laura introducing the Employee Assistance Program. They also discussed the various work-life services offered, the network of experienced professionals, and the support process, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and support. Lastly, they discussed the availability of resources through the TELUS Health One app and website, and the benefits and usage of the Telus Health One Employee Assistance Program (EAP) app.

Telus Health EAP Introduction
Laura from Telus Health introduced the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provided by Lakehead University as a supplemental mental health and well-being benefit. She emphasized that the program is confidential, with access to counseling services available in various locations. Laura also highlighted that the program is no-cost to the users and that reporting is aggregate, not individual. She concluded by mentioning that the program is available to 20 million lives in Canada and has a large clinical network of over 4,500 counselors.
Bilingual Counselling Services for Employees
Laura discussed the voluntary, bilingual, and confidential counselling services available to employees and their immediate dependent family members. She explained that the service is particularly useful for supporting children over the age of 8, and that it's a short-term model. Laura also outlined how to access these services, including through a toll-free number, chat, or app, and emphasized the availability of immediate telephonic counselling for crisis situations. She further mentioned the possibility of booking appointments for in-person, telephone, or video counselling, and the provision of local community resources for various psychosocial needs. Laura also highlighted the availability of helpful content authored by experts on the service's website and mobile app.
Utilizing Telus Health EAP Support
Laura emphasized the importance of seeking help and support, rather than trying to handle everything alone. She highlighted that Telus Health EAP is a valuable resource for managing stress and other life challenges, offering short-term solution-focused counseling. The number of counseling sessions provided is flexible and depends on the individual's needs and progress. Laura also mentioned that if ongoing support or specialized services are needed, a referral to community resources can be provided. She concluded by explaining that Telus Health EAP can be accessed in various ways, including telephone, video, and in-person counseling, as well as online group counseling programs.
Work-Life Services and Consultations Discussed
Laura discussed the various work-life services offered, including consultations with subject matter experts. She highlighted the most popular service, legal support, which provides up to 30 minutes of consultation with a lawyer experienced in a specific area of law. However, tax, employment, and immigration law advice is not provided. Other services include financial consultations with certified financial professionals, nutrition consultations with a registered dietitian, career support services with a career coach, and family support services for childcare and elder care. Laura emphasized that these services are designed to provide general information and advice, not specific investment advice or legal representation.
Experienced Professionals and Network Overview
Laura discussed the network of experienced professionals in their organization, emphasizing that their clinicians hold a minimum master's degree in related fields and have EAP-specific experience. She mentioned that they conduct voluntary self-assessment to facilitate best practice matching for callers with specific needs. Laura also highlighted the organization's largest counseling network across Canada, which aids in matching requests. She noted that all professionals are accredited, certified, and have AP-specific experience. Lastly, she detailed the behind-the-scenes operations, including four care access centers across Canada, toll-free or instant chat services, bilingual support, and language line support for over 250 languages and dialects.
Support Process and Quality Assurance
Laura discussed the support process, emphasizing that every call is screened for risk, with urgent situations being connected to a crisis counselor directly. Non-urgent situations are assessed and directed to the most appropriate resources, typically offering appointments within 5 business days. She also mentioned that quality assurance is conducted through surveys, with feedback provided to the HR team. If a service issue arises, individuals can either contact a supervisor or their HR team for resolution.
TELUS Health One App and Login
Laura discussed the availability of resources through the TELUS Health One app and website. She emphasized the importance of downloading the app for easy access to content, including a QR code for download. Laura also explained the login process, noting that users don't need to sign up but rather log in using shared credentials. She highlighted the 'Connect with us' feature for scheduling appointments, getting phone numbers, and live chatting with support. Jonathon confirmed that he had downloaded the app and was ready to follow along.
Creating Personal Accounts for Features
Laura and Jonathon discussed the process of creating a personal account for accessing certain features on a shared platform. Jonathon clarified that the initial shared account is for general use, while personal accounts are required for features like live chat and scheduling appointments. Laura also highlighted the availability of a resource library and a global peer networking platform called Telus Health Community for seeking support from others experiencing similar issues.
Exploring Toolkit Resources for Well-Being
Laura presented various resources available on the toolkit section of the support and resources library. She highlighted the will and estate planning toolkit, which she found particularly useful for those needing to organize their affairs. She also mentioned manager-specific resources and a well-being section with self-directed resources and counselor support. Laura emphasized the importance of these resources for personal development and organization. Jonathon encouraged attendees to ask questions via chat.
Exploring Telus Health One EAP App
In the meeting, Jonathon and Laura discussed the benefits and usage of the Telus Health One Employee Assistance Program (EAP) app. Jonathon demonstrated how to navigate the app and emphasized its usefulness for both personal and professional stress management. Laura highlighted the program's accessibility to eligible family members and its potential benefits for younger individuals. Jonathon also encouraged the team to use the app for general information and not just in crisis situations. The conversation ended with Jonathon reminding everyone about the upcoming volleyball and hockey games, and the procrastinate and skate event on Lake Tamblyn.
