Under the general direction of the Manager of E-Learning, the Instructional Designer will be responsible for providing instructional design and technical support to faculty and staff. The incumbent will be required to assist with designing, creating, revising, and delivering online courses and learning materials. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to determine appropriate instructional approaches/methodologies using educational technologies and applications to meet course outcomes set out by the course designer. The incumbent will coordinate, develop, and provide ongoing formal, informal, and customized training (e.g., workshops, presentations, drop-in sessions, etc.) to faculty, teaching and administrative staff on the use of course management software (i.e., Desire2Learn) and other educational technologies and applications including the development of related support materials. Further expectations of this position include researching and evaluating emerging technologies and practices that will enhance teaching and learning within distributed learning environments.

The ideal candidate has a post-secondary education in a related field along with demonstrated experience with learning management systems (Desire2Learn). The incumbent will have an understanding of online and distance learning (preferably in a post-secondary setting), AODA customer service standards, as well as the ability to apply learning theory and methods to the use of educational technologies. Additionally, the incumbent will have excellent communication, presentation, customer service, interpersonal, and time-management skills. We are seeking a Research Manager to coordinate activities within a fast-paced multidisciplinary team investigating the development of a community-based emergency care (CBEC) system for remote northern communities throughout northern Ontario with a particular focus on Windigo First Nations Council (WFNC) communities. The main focus of the position is to manage the activities related to the four key phases of the project:

(1) Epidemiological study of medical emergencies in remote aboriginal communities in Northern Ontario with a subgroup analysis of WFNC communities;
(2) A systematic review which focuses on the question "What are the health effects of training laypeople to deliver emergency care in under-serviced populations worldwide?";
(3) collaboratively develop a detailed five year strategic plan to implement CBEC in WFNC communities,that addresses local needs; and
(4) manage and advance collaborative relationships with the program's strategic partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate research activities related to the CBEC project;
  • Develop strong working relationship with WFNC Health Leaders, and liaise with community leaders, and other stakeholders as needed;
  • Assist with documentation, research design and methods, and compiling research reports;
  • Investigate feasibility of various data access options for the epidemiological study;
  • Coordinate data collection and analysis for epidemiological study;
  • Assist with reviewer and data management related to the systematic review;
  • Assist with other research and related administrative tasks as directed/required/assigned;
  • Assist with REB application and maintaining REB approvals;
  • Support research team activities including meeting scheduling, note-taking, photocopying, etc. as required;
  • Compile relevant documents and information from various sources and departments that are involved in or have a stake in emergency response training in northern communities;
  • Assist with knowledge exchange, including poster presentation and manuscript development as requested;
  • May require some travel and flexible hours that extend later in the day during certain times when workload demands are high;
  • Initiate or participate in other special projects and perform other duties as assigned;
  • Interpret and apply organizational policies and workplace rules as appropriate;

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:

  • Completion of a Masters Degree (MA/MSc) in a health-related field preferred, or enrolled in a health-related graduate program required;
  • Research training in epidemiology preferred and completion of a research methods course is required.

  • Collaborative research with Aboriginal communities is an asset;

Reporting to the Manager of Undergraduate Admissions, the Systems Admissions Officer is responsible for overseeing an admissions portfolio as well as systems related responsibilities that impact the application and admission of students to the University. You will be involved in training, development, documentation and implementation of the student information system for the department. As a technical expert, the successful candidate will liaise with the Ontario Universities ' Application Centre (OUAC) regarding changes to system requirements and other data needs. Overseeing a full admissions portfolio involves responding to general inquiries, meeting with applicants, reviewing applications, making sound admission decisions based on program requirements and university regulations, participating in recruitment events, and actively working in a team environment to meet admission goals. This position is also responsible for data collection and analysis, including reporting statistics and monitoring the flow of information from and to the OUAC.

The successful candidate will have an undergraduate university degree in a related field and a minimum of one year related experience. Additional qualifications include extensive computers skills, including the ability to train staff and complete statistical reporting requirements, combined with strong organizational, time management, well-developed research and analytical skills. Preference will be given to applicants with proven experience using the Ellucian Colleague system.

  • Post secondary education along with two years of related administrative assistant experience preferred;

TECHNICIAN B INSTRUMENTATION LABORATORY 

 
Reporting to the Director of Analytical Testing Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the operations of ICP-MS, ICP-AES, HPLC/UPLC-MS, GC-MS and Microscopes in the Lakehead University Instrumentation Laboratory (LUIL). This position will carry out Organic, Environmental, Geochemical testing and analysis.
 
Duties include:        
  • Method development, performing laboratory techniques according to published procedures and releasing results to faculty, students and external clients, disposal of samples and filing of lab results / data.  
  • Provide training within the laboratory to graduate and undergraduate students, and technical support / advice within or outside the laboratory.  
  • Perform work in laboratory facility environments and willing to work with hazardous materials, following all safety requirements and processes.  
  • Assist in training new students (staff, graduate, undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows) ensuring compliance with quality assurance processes and safety (chemical, biohazard) associated with Laboratory instruments.  
  • Review scientific literature and to conduct literature reviews on analytical methods. Design and apply new methods for a range of scientific research, and contribute to the development of laboratory standard operating procedures.  
  • Organize, check and analyze complex data files and backups, and complete statistical analysis of the data.  
  • Support a workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements.  
Qualifications:
  • MSc degree in Chemistry, Biology or Geo/chemistry or Biochemistry and a minimum of 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated skills in instrument/equipment calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or repairs is essential.
  • Preferences will be given to individuals with experiences working with ICPs, Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry and Microscopy.
  • Proficiency with computer programs including MS Office, Excel, Access, Lab instrument operational software is required.
  • Knowledge of analytical laboratory accreditation (ISO 17025) would be definite assets.

Lakehead University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in the area of early reading and language arts in the Education Program at our Orillia campus. The position will commence on August 1, 2015.

 

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. completed (or very near to completion) with emphasis on early reading and elementary language arts teacher education. Experience as an instructor in a teacher education program is highly desirable, and experience in the elementary school system is essential.  The position will include both teaching and service responsibilities in the Consecutive and Concurrent Bachelor of Education programs at the Orillia campus, as well as involvement in graduate teaching and supervision. Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence and service, and will be expected to develop a relevant research program.
