TENURE TRACK AND LIMITED TERM APPOINTMENTS – FACULTY OF LAW

Lakehead University’s Thunder Bay Campus invites applications for one to two tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor in the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, and one to two Limited Term Appointments. The academic rank of the appointment will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. Candidates must be eligible for licensing with any Canadian Law Society.

The Faculty of Law welcomes applications from outstanding established and emerging scholars with a J.D/LL.B, and a graduate degree in law or a cognate discipline, with a broad range of research and teaching interests. The Bora Laskin Faculty of Law is known for its innovative curriculum with mandatory courses in Aboriginal and Indigenous Law implemented in 2013. At the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, practice skills learning is integrated into the curriculum of substantive courses.  The Law Society of Ontario approved the Integrated Practice Curriculum (IPC) in 2013 for the law school to serve as a leader and model in providing legal practice skills as part of the J.D. program.

Lakehead University’s Department of Psychology invites applications for one Tenure-Track faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level to commence January 1, 2017. The Department has several undergraduate programs, along with Master and Doctoral programs in Clinical Psychology and Psychological Science.  

The applicant would bring research, teaching, and clinical expertise to complement the research program of the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Mental Health and Addiction.  The CRC’s current program of research and five-year research plan approaches Indigenous mental health and addiction in four interconnected directions with the following goals: 

1. Identify culturally and contextually appropriate targets of intervention and develop methods for measuring outcomes;
2. Identify western evidence-based and traditional approaches that show promise for treating mental health and addiction issues among Indigenous people;
3. Develop and test intervention approaches which bring together culture- and community-based knowledge with western-scientific methods; and,
4. Disseminate new knowledge broadly in Indigenous communities, scientific communities, and among policy and decision-makers using accessible knowledge translation approaches.

In addition to complementing the CRC’s research program, the successful applicant should be able to contribute to the overall research and training needs of the Graduate Programs in Clinical Psychology - a strong commitment to the Scientist-Practitioner model of training is highly desirable for the position.   

The ideal applicant will hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology and be eligible for registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO). Preference is given to candidates who have graduated from a CPA-accredited program and completed a CPA-accredited internship. Experience working clinically with First Nations children, adolescents, and adults would be a highly valued asset. 

Knowledge of, and ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in child development and child psychopathology would be an asset.  Experience teaching at the graduate level and supervising graduate student research projects is highly desirable.

Lakehead University invites applications for a SSHRC Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in New Media and Literary Culture. All scholars working at the intersection of media studies and literary studies are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in applicants whose research takes account of new media (analog and/or digital) and their implications for literary culture, including but not limited to work in the areas of comparative textual media, electronic literatures, digital poetics, writing machines, emerging textualities, intersections of print and new media culture, digital literary scholarship, new media as literary form, the history and future of reading, book history, and media archaeology. A secondary specialization in Writing and Rhetoric would be an asset.

We seek an exceptional scholar with an outstanding record of innovative publication and research, and a demonstrated ability to participate in and foster collaborative research clusters. The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of English at LakeheadÙs Thunder Bay campus and will be expected to play an active role in the English DepartmentÙs undergraduate and graduate programs. It is expected that the successful candidateÙs research program will provide research opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary, annual research grant, and a reduced teaching load. Lakehead University, Thunder Bay Campus, invites applications for one tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the general area of petrology (igneous and metamorphic) and geochemistry in the Department of Geology. The position may commence as early as August 1, 2026, or no later than January 1, 2027.   

The Department is home to six tenured and tenure-track faculty members in the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Geology, Environmental Earth Science, and Water Science. It has a well-established national and international research reputation with strengths in economic geology, geochemistry, petrology, structural geology, tectonics, early Earth ocean-atmosphere-terrestrial systems, and biogeochemistry. We are a small department with a dynamic focus on experiential learning and have strong connections with local industry and government.  Lakehead University has several centralized labs to support research, including the Lakehead University Environmental Laboratory, and the Lakehead University Instrumentation Lab.  Centralized instrumentation available for the successful candidate’s use includes ICP-OES and MS, a high-resolution FESEM-EDX system, TEM, XRD, and µFTIR.  Housed within the department are several state-of-the-art microscopes with digital imagers, including a fluid inclusion stage with IR, and assorted other instrumentation and equipment to support field activities (i.e., general field equipment, SWIR spectrometer, motorized/unmotorized watercraft, mapping drones).  It is anticipated by the time of the appointment the department will have completed the expansion of microanalytical facility to include hot/cold cathodoluminescence microscope and spectrometer, Raman confocal microscope and spectrometer, a microscope-based laser induced breakdown spectrometer (LIBS), and a µXRF system.  In addition, access to high-temperature experimental instruments (rapid-quench cold-seal vessels, rocking autoclaves and various high-temperature furnaces) housed in department faculty labs is possible.  Also available to the successful candidate is access to the department’s lapidary facility, which is staffed by two full-time technicians.

We especially welcome applicants with research interests in the broad area of igneous/metamorphic petrology and geochemistry (high-temperature, stable and or radiogenic isotopes), who will take a field-based approach and will augment field observations and data with quantitative analysis, laboratory experiments, and/or computational modeling. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise complementary to existing department strengths in critical metal systems and Precambrian geology.

Qualified applicants must have a Ph.D. in geology and a proven record of excellence in research and teaching.  The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in igneous and metamorphic petrology, introductory and advanced courses in geochemistry, and contribute to our field schools.  The ability and willingness to teach courses outside of the main area of interest will be considered an asset. Experience with experiential learning or alternative modes of course delivery is highly desired.  The candidate will also establish a dynamic and externally funded program of research. Applicants with teaching interests and training expertise (i.e., graduate teaching, clinical training/supervision, and research supervision) in any area of clinical psychology are encouraged to apply. Lakehead University invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Workplace Social Justice.  The ideal candidate is one who can contribute to our understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the face of global socioeconomic disparities; helping us to address how principles of fairness and equity are applied in employment contexts, focusing on the distribution of resources, recognition of diverse identities, and participatory decision-making processes. These factors are not only vital for fostering employee satisfaction and well-being but are critical for organizational effectiveness. The growing interest in workplace social justice is reflected in its potential to inform policy and practice that reduces inequities, combats discrimination, and enhances the inclusivity of work settings. Inequities may be individual (health-related (i.e., mental health), race- or gender-based, or based on any aspect of individual identity) or structural (workplace policies or work design). The title of the CRC may be changed to more accurately describe the selected candidate’s proposed area of study.  

This tenure-track appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This CRC position is for five (5) years and is renewable once. Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field.

Tier 2 CRCs are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. Candidates for Tier 2 Chair positions must meet all the requirements for Tier 2 CRCs and be eligible for assistant or associate professor positions. Tier 2 CRC’s normally are not more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of submitting the nomination to the CRC secretariat. However, nominating institutions may nominate a professor or a researcher who is more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination and has experienced career interruptions based on the categories outlined here.

CRCs at Lakehead University are appointed and governed by the provisions of the Lakehead University Faculty Association Collective Agreement.  For the first term of the CRC, the successful applicant will be given a reduced teaching load in order to dedicate the majority of their time to research, be provided with an infrastructure start-up grant, an annual research grant in the amount of $35,000 and research space appropriate for the proposed CRCs program of research.

These must demonstrate how you engage, encourage, and develop the learning capacity of students entering higher education from a diverse array of backgrounds, and how you embed practices and principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in your classroom, your assignments, and your classroom style. Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Multifunctional Materials

Lakehead University invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in the area of Sustainable, Multifunctional Materials. This tenure-track or tenured appointment will be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. This CRC position is for seven (7) years and may be renewed once. Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs are intended for outstanding and innovative established researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields and are recognized as leaders in their discipline.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced scholar with an outstanding record of interdisciplinary research as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals, grant-funded research, and knowledge mobilization activities. The Chair will work closely with colleagues in the Faculty of Engineering and other related disciplines and will have outstanding expertise and a proven track record of research in the area of innovative materials made from renewable resources or recycled materials that perform multiple functions. The Chair will lead and participate in local, national and international research initiatives aimed at environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Requirements
Tier 1 CRCs are for established researchers, acknowledged by their peers as exceptional leaders in their field. Candidates for Tier 1 Chair positions must meet all the requirements for Tier 1 CRCs, and be full professors or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to full professor within one or two years of the appointment.

Successful candidates will:

• Be outstanding and innovative researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields;
• Be recognized internationally as leaders in their fields;
• Have superior records of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and, as chairholders, be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and

Similarly, in line with Indigenous values and practices in support of Indigenous ways of doing, being, seeing, and community-based research, consideration will be given for work with Indigenous communities. This would include any combination of experience related to developing Indigenous community-based projects or initiatives such as formal long-term working relationships with Chiefs and Councils or other Indigenous organizations, proposal writing and funding applications outside of the normally accepted traditional, academic research funding sources (e.g. Tri-Agency Funding), Indigenous community-based initiatives in capacity building or governance, or demonstration of Indigenous traditional knowledge, how that knowledge was learned, and how it would contribute (where appropriate) to the candidate's research program.
