This Student Support Spotlight features Carly Ducharme-Skinner, the Indigenous Student Counsellor at Lakehead University. Drop by to meet Carly and learn all about how she can support Indigenous students. Carly provides one-on-one counselling services for Indigenous students at Lakehead University, including system navigation and referrals, coping skills & stress management, and wholistic and culturally informed mental health services and programming. Carly provides in person services on the Thunder Bay campus, and supports students in Orillia virtually.
 
Event format:
This will be a hybrid event, so you have the option to join in-person at Alumni Commons, or to join through zoom.  Carly will be joining over zoom. Staff from the Office of Indigenous Initiatives and Student Health and Wellness will be hosting in-person in Alumni Commons.
Refreshments will be provided.

Pee for Pizza! Quick, confidential, and no big deal. Drop by for a quick STI test with SMDHU - and pizza! STIs can easily fly under the radar because they often don't show any symptoms. That's why it's a good idea to check once in a while so that you know your status!  What to expect: You'll have a private conversation with a nurse, do a quick urine sample, grab some free sexual health supplies, and have a slice of pizza!

safeTALK is a 4-hour, in-person workshop to build skills in suicide prevention. Participants will learn how to recognize and engage with someone thinking about suicide, overcome attitudes that act as barriers to help, talk openly about suicide and connect with intervention resources for further support.

Through presentations, audiovisuals, small group discussion and scenario practice, you will learn a 4-step TALK model and practical steps to help activate a suicide alert that connects people having thoughts of suicide with more specialized intervention care and relevant resources.

This workshop is free for all Lakehead students, faculty, and staff.

All participants will receive a learning booklet, resources and a Certificate of Completion.

Get moving and enjoy an afternoon of yoga, outdoor games, and community! Challenge your friends to Spikeball, volleyball, giant Kerplunk, and more, or come on your own and meet fellow Thunderwolves in a fun, welcoming environment. Drop-in “try-it” outdoor yoga sessions will be offered at 1:30 and 2:30pm, so you can join whenever it fits your schedule. You'll also have the opportunity to connect with Lakehead Athletics staff and learn about the free fitness and recreation programs available to students. Stay for a few minutes or spend the afternoon. Everyone is welcome! 

 

“Try-it” outdoor yoga classes: what to expect

  • Beginner-friendly, absolutely no experience necessary!

  • Only 20 minutes long

  • Drop-in: no need to sign up.

  • Yoga mats provided

  • You can wear athletic clothes if you'd like, or your regular clothes. This 

  • Yoga class will be held on the outdoor multisport surface. You’ll check in at the welcome table at Namaste and Play, sign a waiver, and grab a mat!

Drop by Alumni Commons to build your own brunch, learn about on-campus food resources, and connect with other students in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

The Brunch Bar menu rotates weekly, but you can always expect something like toast, yogurt parfaits, and fruit, plus the occasional special feature. Gluten-free and vegan options are always available.

We will also have occasional special guests to share information about timely topics.
