 This area is responsible for: 

  • Housekeeping services are provided to all academic and administrative facilities.

These services include,

  • Dusting, sweeping, garbage collection, washroom cleaning and restocking, classroom chalk replacement, and chalkboard/eraser cleaning. Floor finishing and window washing are performed periodically.
  • Spills, water removal, and other non-routine custodial needs should be reported to the Physical Plant at 343-8010, 8273 or Submit Request
  • Furniture and equipment moving services are available to University departments. Large scale relocations require up to 14 days advance notice. Contact Physical Plant at 343-8010, 8273 or Submit Request to make arrangements. 

When submitting a work order for a furniture move, please consider the following.

  • Remove all items from the furniture that is being moved, empty file cabinets, shelves, drawers, and desk/table tops
  • Clearly label the item(s) that is to be moved and where these items are to be relocated
  • Small items are to be boxed up and labelled.  Physical Plant does not provide boxes, labels or packing tape
  • In your work order request please indicate where the furniture is to be moved from and to
  • The requestor is responsible for dissembling any furniture prior to moving.  Physical Plant no longer disassembles furniture due to lack of available resources.  Any furniture that can not be moved through doorways safely will not be moved
  • The requestor is responsible for assembling any new or existing furniture.  Physical Plant no longer assembles furniture due to lack of available resources.

Cleaning Priorities 

Cleaning priorities fall into four levels. Our Housekeeping staff follow these priorities as listed below in the time allowed before moving to the next level. 

  • Level 1 – Areas of Liability and Safety concerns (snow removal at entrances, floods, etc.)
  • Level 2 – Public and Student use areas: These areas are generally the classrooms, washrooms, entrances, corridors, and stairwells.
  • Level 3 – General and departmental areas (general offices, research labs, etc.)
  • Level 4 – Work areas and individual offices

REVISED CLEANING PROTOCOLS

Physical Plant Services will provide cleaning activities by areas and associated frequencies are listed below.

In light of the COVID-19 virus, cleaning protocols have been adjusted to focus on cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces in all areas serviced below and including elevator buttons, stair railings, door knobs and plates, light switches, faucets and water fountains

Washrooms (Twice a day- once during the day shift and once during night shift)

  • Picking up of garbage: cleaning and disinfecting bins
  • Sweeping and picking up of garbage on the floor
  • Checking and refilling of paper towel, soap, and toilet paper dispensers
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of mirror, sink, and sink counter
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of toilets and urinals
  • Sweeping and mopping and disinfecting of the floor.

(Monthly)

  • Wiping, cleaning and disinfecting of high-level surfaces
  • Wiping off dust particles from lamp fixtures
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of the ventilation grill and entrance door-metal plate

Kitchens (Cleaned once daily)

  • Picking up of garbage: cleaning and disinfecting bins
  • Sweeping and picking up garbage on the floor
  • Checking and refilling of paper towel and soap dispensers
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of the sink and sink counter and appliance handles

Personal Offices (Cleaned once a month) General Offices (Cleaned once a week)

  • Sweeping and picking up garbage on the floor
  • Vacuuming floors with carpets
  • Cleaning and disinfecting hard surfaces
  • Garbage & Recycling to follow Lakehead University Waste Division Program.  Sorting by occupant in centralized locations

Meeting rooms (Cleaned daily)

  • Picking up of garbage from recycling bin stations: cleaning and disinfecting bins
  • Sweeping and picking up garbage on the floor and vacuuming floors with carpets
  • Cleaning and disinfecting office counters, tables, chairs and desktops
  • Checking and refilling or replacing hand sanitizers and disinfectant solution and paper towels

Student common areas (Cleaned daily)

  • Picking up of garbage from recycling bin stations: cleaning and disinfecting bins
  • Sweeping and picking up garbage on the floor and disinfecting same
  • Vacuuming floors with carpets
  • Checking and refilling or replacing hand sanitizers and disinfectant solution and paper towels
  • Cleaning and disinfection of counters, tables, and desk tops

Classrooms (Cleaned daily)

  • Sweeping and picking up of garbage on the floor and disinfecting same
  • Wiping and cleaning of high- surfaces (e.g. vents, chalkboards, whiteboards, etc.)
  • Vacuuming of carpeted floor
  • Sweeping and mopping of floors
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of counters, tables, and desk tops
  • Garbage & recycling to follow Lakehead University Waste Division Program.  Sorting by occupant in centralized locations

 Labs (Cleaned Daily)

  • Waste removal, cleaning and disinfecting recycling bins
  • Sweeping and picking up of garbage on the floor
  • Cleaning of mirrors
  • Sweeping and mopping of floors
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of counters, tables, chairs and desk tops (only as permitted by cleaning instructions list on each lab door)

To place your order, please fill out the Order Form.  Once filled out please email your order to workorde@lakeheadu.ca.  If you are ordering a dispenser that attaches to the wall, a work order will be generated to installed it.  Building Maintenance will confirm with you where you would like it installed, once delivery of the dispenser has been made.
