Supporting Students In Distress

As staff and faculty, you are often the first to recognize that a student is in distress so it is important that you feel equipped to identify these behaviours and also understand how you can help.  The Supporting Students in Distress Guide and accompanying workshop outline the various levels of distress and the resources you can provide for a student in each level of distress.  We will also cover available supports in various areas, both on and off-campus including Counselling and Wellness, Academic Services, Disability Services, Legal and Conduct, and Community Supports.

Registration required. Those who register will receive a recording of the event if unable to attend live. Grad student welcome.

Campus Rec Live- Full Body Fitness

Join Campus Rec instructor Nicole for a 50-minute sweat session to end your workday. 

This class is a full-body cardio workout that will get your heart rate up, and your muscles burning. It will include exercises for all major muscle groups, so be ready to work hard! 
 
Equipment needed: All you need is space to move around, clothes you are comfortable moving around in, a water bottle, and a device that can connect to zoom! An exercise mat is recommended for comfort but not required.   

Campus Rec Live- Stretch and Strengthen

Join Campus Rec instructor Nicole for a 50-minute lunchtime sweat session. Live over zoom, you can join in on this full-body workout that will help you with muscle building, flexibility, and overall mobility. 

Equipment needed: All you need is space to move around, clothes you are comfortable moving around in, a water bottle, and a device that can connect to zoom! An exercise mat is recommended for comfort but not required. 

Cooking Demonstration w/ Chef Jen Sauve and ELC

Join Chef Jen Sauve as she does a live Cooking Class! Jen has a passion for taking old family favourite meals and transforming them with international flavours and flair! 

Join us as Jen elevates the traditional spaghetti and meatballs into a Thai Noodle Bowl!  This easy, budget-friendly recipe will become a favourite! 

Participants will receive an email with ingredients prior to the event.

The event will be recorded and sent out to all those who register.

Mindful Eating Meditation

Mindful eating focuses on in-the-moment awareness of the food and drink you put into your body. It involves observing how the food makes you feel and the signals your body sends about taste, satisfaction, and fullness.

Art and Yoga w/Vik Wilen

Participants will begin by practicing a 45 minute guided hatha yoga class. Once the yoga glow has settled, participants will begin a 1 hour guided acrylic painting class designed by Thunder Bay artist Vik Wilen.

Registration required. The supply list will be emailed prior to the event. A recording will be sent to those registered if you are unable to make it live.

Students Supporting Students in Distress

Often friends, roommates, student leaders or classmates will be the first ones to notice a concerning behaviour which may indicate a peer is having difficulty and may need help. The workshop will:

  • Outline the various levels of distress and the resources you can provide for someone in each level of distress
  • Explore some of the key guidelines on how to recognize, respond and refer someone in distress;
  • Cover available supports in various areas, both on and off-campus including Counselling and Wellness, Academic Services, Disability Services, Legal and Conduct, and Community Supports.

Registration required. Students who attend will be able to add it to their CCR.

Refresh Sleep Program

The Refresh Sleep program aims to provide Lakehead students, staff and faculty with the skills and strategies to achieve more restful nights.

When you join the Refresh Sleep program, you will receive a weekly email for eight weeks that has an attached PDF with important information and tips that have been proven to help improve sleep. It is encouraged to spend at least thirty minutes per week with the program information. The materials include information about:

  • The physiology of sleep
  • Sleep hygiene
  • Relaxation training
  • Mindfulness training
  • Cognitive strategies
  • Keeping sleep logs
