Building an EMPOWERed Classroom

Event Date:
Tuesday, February 21, 2023 - 11:00am to 1:30pm EST
Event Location:
Zoom
Dear Course Instructor,

You are invited to participate in a project titled “Building an EMPOWERed Classroom: Examining the Impact of a Two-Day Virtual Workshop Among Postsecondary Course Instructors." The project is being led by MSc Candidate Delaney Johnson from the School of Kinesiology along with Supervisor Dr. Erin Pearson in the School of Kinesiology.

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the impact of a two-session, education-based virtual workshop for postsecondary course instructors. It is being offered in collaboration with Lakehead Student Health and Wellness and focuses on sharing mental health information and strategies to support students in the classroom through resource provision. You are invited to participate because you are a faculty member/contract lecturer who teaches at Lakehead University. Those who are on sabbatical or have a teaching release are also welcome to participate. Because this workshop is virtual, you will need access to a device and a stable internet connection.

The first of the two online sessions offered in collaboration with Student Health and Wellness will take place in February, over reading week, with the second session taking place eight weeks later in April. These sessions will last approximately 60-90 minutes. To see if the workshops increased mental health literacy and self-efficacy to recommend mental health resources, you will be asked to complete questionnaires prior to and immediately following each session.

Content may increase your knowledge of resources and supports available for both students and you as faculty along with heightened confidence to recommend these services. This new knowledge may also help to offset any burden you as an instructor feel with regard to assisting students in the classroom. Data obtained can help to shape future programming aimed at supporting both students and instructors. Additionally, stigmatizing attitudes may be decreased, which has been shown to foster a more supportive and accepting environment.

Self-Care Mindfulness Jar Making

Event Date:
Friday, February 17, 2023 - 11:30am to 1:30pm EST
Event Location:
Agora

TIME CHANGE- 11:30-3:30 pm

Wind up Love Week and get ready for a relaxing reading week by making mindfulness jars with Student Health and Wellness.

Mindfulness meditations ask us to suspend judgment of the workings of the mind and unleash our natural curiosity about what is happening in the moment, allowing ourselves to be with each moment with warmth and kindness, to ourselves and to others.

And while this may sound frivolous to some, or even a little weird, but the research suggests that developing this human capacity to observe ourselves and our surroundings non-judgmentally and with compassion has deep and nourishing effects on our well-being that ripple out into our daily lives and communities.

Take10 - Sexual Health & Know Your Status

Event Date:
Thursday, February 9, 2023 - 1:30pm to 3:30pm EST
Event Location:
Main Cafeteria

It's February, which means love is in the air. And you know what else is in the air? A whole world of bacterial and viral infections just waiting to make themselves at home in your vulnerable mucus membranes. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) aren’t gross, yucky, a sign of poor judgement or character, or even all that uncommon. In fact, if you have sex, you’re probably going to end up getting one. You’re literally more likely to get one than to never get one. You might even have one right now and not know it. And that’s not the end of the world.

Join staff from Student Health & Wellness outside the Main Cafeteria on February 9th between 1:30pm and 3:30pm to learn about local and online sexual health resources, find out how easy STI testing is, and even pick up some free safe sex supplies (like condoms and lube). You can also call 807-343-8361 to book an STI test at Student Health & Wellness and get a FREE PERSIAN* all month long!
*by appointment only, must be an active student.

It can often be a challenge to take a minute to ourselves, so why not make self-care a habit and Take10.

Buddha said ‘unless we treat ourselves with love and compassion, we cannot reflect the same on others.’ Once we start experiencing self-love and self-compassion for ourselves, we can show the same to others too.
