The discussion tool supports learner engagement and community building within online sites. When used as an assessment tool, learners have the opportunity to share their responses and respond to others asynchronously thus allowing for more thoughtful contributions. Discussions support small group discussions for more manageable interactions as well as entire-class forums that are typically used for ungraded purposes such as introductions, content-related sharing, and administrative purposes (e.g., course updates).
